What is a Forest Engineer?

Im considering going to Oregon State to study engineering (haven’t decided which engineering major yet). When I was looking at all the engineering majors one caught my eye, it was a Forest Engineer degree. I really wanted to go into forestry or Wildlife biology but the pay isn’t very good so I chose Engineering instead. When I saw this it really intrigued me, Ive tried to do research on it but can’t find much about it. What does a Forest engineer do? What is there pay? Is it mainly a paper pusher job or is there field work? Is there any demand?

Think of it as an ABET accredited Civil Engineering degree with an emphasis on Forestry. Pay and job opportunities are likely similar to Civil, but with forestry being a fairly small job market (but then, you also don’t have very many "Forest Engineer’s applying for those jobs).

Like Civil (and all engineering majors) expect to do much of your work in the office, but you will be expected to own a hard hat.

Your best bet is to talk with an adviser at the school.

Good Luck!
