So I'm taking the ACT during a school day this Tuesday for the 1st time and I was wondering what would be a good score to get into Rice University.

These are the average scores for Rice University:

ACT Composite: 30 / 34
ACT English: 31 / 35
ACT Math: 29 / 35
ACT Writing: 8 / 10

Middle 50 of ACT of admitted students is actually 32-35 now. I’m scared my 33 ACT won’t help me get in.

Just write killer essays and you should be okay.

Is their admission rate high or low? What part of the application do they look at the most?

Admission rate is super low, not as low as ivies, but still very competitive.

I met with a former admissions person (who now works as a HS college counselor) a few months ago concerning Rice. After showing him my stuff, he said that he’d “be a little more confident [in my application] if I had a higher ACT score.” I had a 31, retook and got a 33. Also, when I visited Rice, I met with a friend and talked to him about the application/admissions process. While he made a very similar point as TheKongo, “just write really good essays,” he also mentioned that he “got a 33, which is pretty average for Rice.”

As far as I can tell, 32-34 won’t help our hurt your application. 35 or 36 will make you stand out but obviously not seal anything. 30-31 is pushing it and anything below that will actively hurt you.

And as with any school, they take a “holistic” approach but value your transcript above all else.

I am taking my ACTs in april. I really want to go to rice. I guess I will have to do a great job on the ACT to impress the admissions committee.
