What is a good amount of community service?

I know community service should be done whether or not you need more hours to look good and stuff but my public school says we only need 30 hours while my friends private school says 60+, and THEN I read on one of the threads here that someone got 200+ every summer! Now I feel like I'm in trouble

negative forty-two hours

I know people that actually care enough about their community to actually do over 1000+ hours. However, the few friends that I know that have done this love it so much that its their only outside of school activity.

IMO, 50+ is substantial enough to be noticed (any less, and it seems like it is just done to supplement an application). If it is 200+ hours, then community service can be considered a mainstay in one's extracurricular activities, so to say. If it is more than 400+ hours, then it seems that this person is probably really dedicated to community service. You can't ever really say that someone has started a bogus community service project just for college admissions. Even if he/she did, the resulting intentions were at least honorable. These are just my assumptions

haha, right (unlucky for them). Adcoms can usually get a feel for whether it is a "legitimate" project from the rest of the person's application i.e. essays or recommendations. Then they'd definitely admit/reject on that basis
