I plan on studying Classics, Classical Studies, or Ancient History. It depends on what the college offers. I want to become an historian.
About me:
My SAT scores weren’t very high. Though there are other factors as to why. Stress from my personal life. My score was only a 980. I know that it’s bad. My math score was 460, my reading and writing score was 520, my reading score was 27, my writing and language score was 25, my other math score was 23, my science score was 27, and my history score was 24.
Though my GPA isn’t that high, I’m considered a bright student by my teachers, school counselor, family, and my therapist. My GPA is 3.3. I’ve had medical issues stop me from being in class, so that’s part of the reason that it’s not higher.
I’m Microsoft Office specialized, EverFi specialized, and a completer in business where my grades were at least a B. I’ve taken two years worth of French. I’ve also made honor roll and I have had a 4.0 GPA in high school.
Hello,
Fellow Ohio student looking to major in Classics here. Throughout my research, I’ve found that Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati have the best Classics programs in Ohio. Ohio State’s program is superior, both in regards to academics and research opportunities, extracirriculars, etc. Of course this is just my opinion, but I’ve spent many hours researching Classics departments at schools around the country. Your SAT is very low for Ohio State, so I suggest retaking it or trying the ACT. I also suggest setting up a meeting with someone from the Classics department, no matter what school you visit. I’ve found that professors in Classics departments are very willing to meet with prospective students. I haven’t found one school that hasn’t been willing to meet. Good luck!
You may want to look at some test optional colleges. Here is the list sorted by state. https://www.fairtest.org/university/optional/state
What can you afford? Do you have any other limitations (ex. geographic, anything else?)
Thank you! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the University of Cincinnati. It’s becoming one of my top choices. They’ve already messaged me and asked for my information. I’m from West Virginia, but I want to leave state. I hope you find a good school! Good luck!
The price doesn’t matter. I want to go to college in Pennsylvania or Ohio.
I would not worry about in or out of state – college will feel like a different world wherever you are.
I have to get out of this state. It’s toxic. There’s too many scars from here. I need to start over.
Ok so you’re out of state. The cost really hits you. University of Cincinnati is very good! I’ve been in the campus, and it is pretty nice. Definitely take the time to visit the campuses if you can. Just remember that as state schools, Cincinnati and OSU care a lot about academics in the admissions process, more so than top schools. As out of state, you are competing against the out of state students. Definitely try to increase your standardized test scores. Sorry, I know you said you wanted confidence, but I’m trying to help. Classics is not easy, so make sure you’re dedicated to the subject matter. If you cannot put the time into getting better test scores, maybe Classics isn’t for you. Just keep these in mind. Have you taken Greek or Latin in high school?
Greek and Latin were never offered. You don’t need to give me confidence. I just feel like I don’t have a chance with any college.
Talk with your parents, and find out how much they can afford to pay. That will determine where you can study. Let us know what your budget is, and we can help you find good options.
If you don’t mind a religious college, Franciscan University of Steubenville OH, has classics. It’s west of Pittsburgh. My S18 is going there this fall.
Sorry that they weren’t offered. You can self study. For Latin, I suggest Wheelocks latin. It is a common Latin textbook and costs 16 dollars on amazon. Also, I suggest reading some literature from the Ancient World. The Odyssey, Ovid’s metamorphoses, Oedipus Rex. There are many to expose yourself to the field. You do have a chance with college! You have a good GPA. You just need to increase the test scores. Don’t beat yourself up. If you do that, you’ve already accepted defeat and that will not help you. Through some determination, you can get into a school with a a good Classics program.
Thank you! I needed to hear that.
Although you wrote that “price doesn’t matter”, I would like to suggest two or three financial safeties that may be of interest to you.
Berea College in Berea, Kentucky
Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.
College of the Ozarks in Point lookout, Missouri.
You may be in luck when it comes to out-of-state tuition and financial aid. The only college in West Virginia to offer a major in Classics is Marshall U, which offers a major in Latin and Classics. If you make a case for wanting to major in Greek (Marshall offers only 2 years of Greek and no major) or Classical Archaeology, you could qualify for in-state tuition at out-of-state southern public universities with Classics departments through the Academic Common Market.

Browsing the previously approved applications, a student from West Virginia was able to get in-state tuition to study Classical Archaeology at UT Knoxville.
There are many good options that participate in the ACM, including U Alabama, Ole Miss, William & Mary, UMBC, USC, UT Knoxville, and U Memphis (if you’re interested in their Egyptology major with a side of Classics). You’ll want to get those test scores up for most of these, however. Have you tried doing test prep for the SAT? I recommend trying a practice ACT as well to see if you fare better with that test.
OP: Try Khan Academy on the internet for free test prep.
I probably will this time.
