I might go to UGA next year and I wondering where I should dorm. I put computer science as my major and I want to kinda be near those type of people. I want a sorta quiet area so i can study because If I go to UGA i want to transfer to TECH later on(I was waitlisted from TECH)
None of my good friends are going there lol it is sad.

If you’ve been accepted into the honors program, I would highly recommend Myers. Rutherford Hall, home of the residential college, would be excellent as well. Anything on the Myers quad is a plus for someone who wants a quieter dorm. The freshman high-rises tend to be more social, but you could always head to the science library, main library, MLC or law library.

Brown Hall is opening up on the medical school campus. It is open to undergraduate, transfer and graduate students. It might not be a bad option either.

If you’re an engineering/comp sci major, you’ll find more like-minded students on campus than in previous years. Fall 2013 will mark the final phase in of the new engineering degrees. The College of Engineering was established in the summer of 2012. UGA has had environmental, biological and computer systems engineering for a while, but ME, CE and EE graduate and undergraduate programs are new. Join an engineering student organizations while at UGA. Consider doing undergraduate research as well. I can tell you that CURO is planning on doing a lot more with the engineering crowd in the coming year.

Good luck!

is the payne hall any good

We’re visiting UGA tomorrow just to look at dorms. DS is in honors, probably majoring in computer science. We’re going to be checking out Myers and Hill communities mostly. We looked at Creswell on the tour. DS wants a somewhat social dorm, but that place was a dump. I couldn’t quit thinking how 900 people could out of that place safely in case of a fire. Any suggestions on dorms?

My son lived in Creswell last year, as a Freshman (of course). Yes, all four of the high rises are over 50 years old (including Oglethorpe, I think). I went to UGA, too, and lived in Russell. Honestly, I would recommend them because as a Freshman, it’s a great way to meet people, especially if you’re not in the Greek system. Yes, it’s crowded, but Creswell is right next to the Bolton dining hall, and they also have separate communities you can join. You can make friends there that last you all four years and beyond. If you’re a little shy, it’s also a good way for you to be around people. The main problem I see with these dorms are the germs. Seriously, people get respiratory problems with mold, and stay sick for a long time. Not trying to scare you. You’ll be fine, but you have to take care of yourself. UGA is so awesome, and better every year. You’ll love it no matter where you live! Best of luck.

I’m awaiting acceptance into the Honors program currently and will transfer to Myers if I make it, but what suggestions does anyone have for other dorms? I’d be really interested in a nice social area my freshmen year. And I’m a fairly avid musician. Planning on going into biological engineering. Thanks in advance.

Gpanda, I wouldn’t recommend Payne. If you want quiet, try for Rutherford. You’ll need to be accepted to the Franklin Residential College but it’s the nicest dorm on campus by far with a great location near 2 dining halls and close to a 3rd. Huge rooms, private bathrooms, brand new. This may change in the future but this year Rutherford was a quieter, more academic dorm with many upperclassmen. If that’s the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for, I’d definitely apply to the FRC. You might also look into Reed although it’s not half as nice. If you’re in the honors program, live at Myers.
