What Is A Good Major For ME?

i like surfing, snowboarding, and photography

i like the idea of business and the stock market

i am NOT, however, a math whiz or a fan of mathematics

i am a pretty good writer, but have heard that journalism and english majors are usually teachers, something i am not interested in.

i would like to live very comfortably, if not rich...(who doesnt?)

i have applied to transfer to PSU, Saint Josephs, UDel, and Loyola College.

Law...

10 Char

That's not a major.

Surfing and snowboarding in State College, Pa? How about a geography major? You seem like a perfect business or marketing major. While no guarantee of the big bucks, you can certainly dream about it with a business background.

i want to do business. i also think marketing would be awesome, except for the fact that i am not a great nor do i LIKE public speaking. at least not in a classroom setting.

Excuse me. I was recommending professional school in order to get a J.D.

bump...more replies?

how about FINANCE?

...BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING ?

Rightcoastsurf - what about a major in Marketing - minor in Media Production/photography - and throw some of the journalism/writing courses in there as well - join the snowboard team and the surfing club - all in one whallop - ECU in NC has it all - then do what ever floats your boat and makes you happy - and could well include all - or many - of your interests - sounds like a good life to me.

Gee sounds like the makings for a National Geographic production..................

i want to do marketing, unfortunately i am not a great (in fact i HATE) public speaking...a big component in marketing, no?

RCS - ^^ it is a small part of Marketing education - If marketing is your forte - you should not let the public speaking part deter you - it is also a good major that can open up doors for other things as well.

well...i might consider that then. anyone else with other good ideas? i got accepted into penn state's economics major, will they be able to let me change my major would you think?

(im a transfer)

well it seems you have many interests, as do most college students. But I think you should find something that fits more closely to your passions, thereby increasing your potential happiness in that field...

You seem like an outside people person, so maybe business would be great, at least on the marketing, advertising, consulting, or of course sales.

"i am NOT, however, a math whiz or a fan of mathematics"

In that case, I would say that the suggestion of industrial engineering would definitely not be a good idea. Industrial engineering inolves a LOT of math, as much or more as most other engineering disciplines. Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, maybe differential equations. Matrix Theory (Linear Algebra)--usually a very rigorous math course. A year of upper-level statstics--not the the version the business majors take, but the full calc-based version the math and stats majors take. Upwards from there, Operations Research 1 and 2, which is like another level up from Matrix Theory.

Some type of business degree, like the others are saying, sounds like it might be a good fit. If you're really not sure specifically what you want to study or do for a career (most people aren't at this point), maybe a management degree would work. But if you want to do marketing, do markeing. Like they said, public speaking isn't a central focus. Still, being a good public speaker is a useful skill in life, so I'd encourage you to challenge yourself to develop in that area.

I don't know much about Penn State specifically, but I would guess that they would let you change your major into the bus college. Maybe you would want to do dual major in econ and a business major, that's another idea.

well someone said econ was extremely math oriented, something i wasent aware of, at least not in the BA part of econ, BS i understand if there is more math. anyhow, im in as a BA in econ student. im sure i could change that if i like. and yes, i know i should better myself at public speaking, but its one of those things that if i dont like it, i try to avoid it (i know, not a good way to do things)

anyone else care to chime in?

come on guys. i got accepted into penn state as a BA in econ major. im nervous as im not an EXCELLENT math student, and dont enjoy it that much...

What are your other options?? Any?? -are you ED and locked in or??

Business Majors for you-- Marketing, Managament or Finance. Particularly marketing since that's your interest. Don't worry about the public speaking. There's so much within the field of marketing that has nothing to do with public speaking. That's not really what marketing is about anyway. If you didn't want to major in say "Public Speaking" because you don't like public speaking, then that's probably a decent reason. But if you like marketing and don't like public speaking, it would seem totally reasonable to major in marketing.

i agree, unfortunately i cannot transfer into penn states business school (they do not allow it, many universities are the same with this)...

what are my options as far as NON business majors, but will still allow me to do something in the field of business or go to grad school for business...ive heard psychology, but that bores me to tears.
