What is a "good" SAT II score?

The colleges that I am applying to that require the SAT subject tests are all Ivy Leagues. That fact, combined with the fact that you are supposed to choose subjects that you are strong in, makes me feel like these SAT subject scores should be almost perfect. How true is this?

Right now, I have a 750 in U.S. History and a 790 in Literature. I also plan on taking Biology and maybe a math one this fall. Is my 750 score okay, or should I retake the U.S. History as well?

750 - 800 = Excellent
700 - 740 = Very Good
650 - 690 = Good
600 - 640 = Acceptable

^^^ That chart is true for almost every test, but not for a few of the language ones, I would think. The average score on Korean and Chinese is well within the 700s, so a “good” score on those two would be much higher.

750 or higher is always perfectly fine on US Hist.

At the same time, if you’re not a native/heretic speaker, I’m sure 700+ is a very good score.

kwu, Do you think these parameters are true for every subject?? How about Math II vs. Physics (is a 600 Physics too bad?).

Those scores seem low to be considered good?

790 Lit is amazing, just fyi.

750+ is good for every test. The only exception is that if you want to be a math or engineering or physics major, your math 2 score should be 800

I want to be an engineering major, so I don’t have a chance just because I got a 760 on MathIIC?

I agree with kwu’s chart. 750+ FTW

no, but you are at a disadvantage

A 760 Math II is not going to put you at a disadvantage lmao. Don’t listen to this nonsense…

The difference between a 760 and 800 is a matter of a few questions, which amounts to practically nothing on your overall application…

If colleges could see your raw score, then a 760 could put you at a disavantage I suppose. But they can’t.

CC’s “good” SAT II score

800 = what you’re supposed to get
< 800 = fail

lol =]

@thrill3rnit3: Can’t agree more. A good SAT II score is a score like mine XD

thrill3rnit3: LOL. And its true.
I didn’t notice how true it was, until I realized I was quite disappointed with my 780 Physics!

Do you think a 700 on Chemistry and 720 Math II are good enough for NYU (not Stern!!), Carnegie Mellon and U of Southern California? (and JHU ED)

I am going to major in biology…or even undecided :P

Given a strong stats elsewhere (i.e. gpa, class rank) I’ve been advised that ivys are looking for scores over 700. Don’t stress over these excellent scores^^^^

My D thought she had good scores at 780 lit/ 750 USH/700 math II…until we see the number of kids on CC that have all 800s. I’m not saying her scores are “bad”. Just not top Ivy by any means.

That said…I still contend that, if one can’t have perfect GPA as well as perfect test scores…the GPA is more important. From my D’s very large high school, only one student was admitted to Harvard (of 7 applicants) last year. This child had an unbelievable GPA, and was valedictorian of a huge school. And he/she had one SAT I score (CR?) that was in the mid 700s. But their math was mid 600s! Of course, the rest of their app was undoubtedly stellar, and I didn’t see their SAT IIS…might have been all 800s for all I know.

I personally think all 700s wouldn’t IMMEDIATELY get one to the “no way” pile, but it will get there fast if the rest of the app isn’t amazing. I think most top schools (HYPSM) get enough 750+ in ALL categories that they don’t have to dig farther.

But know that ONE “bad” score is USUALLY not “make or break”.

Luck to all.

“750+ is good for every test. The only exception is that if you want to be a math or engineering or physics major, your math 2 score should be 800”
Does this apply for chemistry for a biochem/biology major (me?) I got a 700 and am worried, and am applying to MIT, Caltech, etc.
