What is a good summer program for a rising freshman?

My youngest has seen her siblings go off over the years, and would like to have a great summer program experience- preferably as a high school intern in a science lab, but I don't think it is do-able because of her age. She is looking at the programs offered by CTY, Duke-TIP, Exeter, and Andover. What other programs are out there for rising high school freshmen?

Hi @ItsJustSchool, Northwestern also has a CTY/DUKE tip program and Purdue has a non credit program. My d cold called a professor at a university and did very fundamental lab work her soph summer. The prof was very flattered but it was unpaid. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Vanderbilt also has a summer program.

@livn487, she is looking at CTY and will take the SAT next weekend. I am having her look into TIP as well, but CTY has locations much closer, so idk- I do love the TIP Davidson location…

Contacting a prof from a local university sounds like a possibility…

I found a small extension of a Medical school in the next community and we looked up the profs and their research. Then, found a woman who was working on some subjects of interest. It was pretty basic but, my daughter met the other graduate students and even was included in dept meetings and picnics. She learned a ton about all sorts of things in addition to the research! It was very scary for her at first but she is now 20 yrs old and it was an invaluable experience. I know what you mean about the youngest wanting and needing to forge her own path.

Also, in our town, the science teachers run a program for middle school girls. There could be a program like that near you where they might want some high school “counselors” and role models.
