For probably 6 years I have been trying my best, with my limited education in investing, to make money in the stock market. My parents tell me that there is a negative stigma associated with day trading and the stockmarket in general.

In your opinion, would investing count as an EC? And, if you were to put in on an application, how would you word it? I don't want it to give it the negative stigma, and I do spend a lot of time doing it, and need a way to demonstrate that I have success and invest often.

I’m not sure that there is negative stigma to the stock market in general (it does function to raise capital for companies), but your parents are not lying to you about the stigma associated with day trading.

Go to the library and borrow Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor, or borrow any of the “Boglehead” series of investment books.

Demonstrating “success” in investing (i.e., alpha) as opposed to being a ship raised by the tide (beta) is a fool’s errand. If you could really generate alpha, you don’t need to demonstrate it, just save me a seat on your private jet, okay?

Doesn’t seem like an EC to me. And if it was, it wouldn’t be “negative” really…but I wouldn’t list it as an EC. Like stated above, hobby would be a better classification.
