What is a great recommendation?

reading some official decision threads, i saw that people put "great rec from math teacher", but how do you guys define a rec as great or brilliant?! cause i saw my rec and it looked alright, but i have no idea if its reaaaally that good. can anyone provide a sample letter??

My comments pertain only to colleges that weigh heavily LORs (since even some that ask for them don’t really)

I guess it matters what you mean by “great”. For the colleges, “great” means clear and concise, and has memorable details of specific student-teacher encounters in terms of classroom presence, cogent academic work, outstanding leadership, etc. For the colleges, they want teachers to not be afraid to say “amongst the top one percent in my 20 year career” or “truly my most outstanding student this year” if that’s the case.

However, “great” for colleges is also honest. Obviously not every student is worthy of superlatives and hyperbole. If a teacher feels lukewarm about the student, the college would love to know this too.

“Great” for the student is one where the highest commendations are accompanied by the detials and anecdotes I cited above. But again, you may or may not have these accomplishments. “Great” for you is the LORs that’ll get you into your realistic target schools.

final note: just because a student feels his LOR is “great” shouldn’t be that weighted. It’s not as if he/she reads 1000s of LORs to compare, right?

Hope this helps.

This was one that my teacher gave me for an art program; I would consider it to be a great rec, even though it may not be very specific.

When I question why it is that I chose to teach, Sirensong is the answer. Few will measure up to the standards set by Sirensong. When Sirensong asked me to write him a letter of recommendation, my concern became how would I express to you just how special he is, as a student, artist and person. As Sirensong’s teacher and National Art Honor Society advisor, I am delighted to recommend him for enrollment into your art program. I have come to know him as an outstanding student, a gifted visual artist and adept leader. Sirensong will be a wonderful addition to any art program, and like oil, will rise to the top.

This is my third year interacting with Sirensong, and his dedication and passion for art has been evident to me from day one. Students and faculty often remark that Sirensong is blessed with considerable talent – this is true. What many of them overlook is just how hard Sirensong works to cultivate his skills. Sirensong actively seeks opportunities for growth – this and good old-fashioned hard work has equated in tremendous artistic growth. Sirensong is also member of the National Art Honor Society, and has been for two years. He is an active participant – enthusiastic and dedicated.

Participation in your program would provide Sirensong with an invaluable experience – not only in interacting with a gifted visual arts staff, but students who are equally committed to art. This interaction would equate in tremendous artistic growth. Sirensong is one of those rare students who exhibit a superb blend of maturity, hard work, skill, and passion for his studies. He genuinely approaches assignments with the desire to do the best possible job.

I would highly recommend Sirensong, without hesitation. Please contact me at (phone #) or (e-mail address) should you require additional information.
