I know that a hook is an aspect of one's application that sets him or her apart from the others, for example, a large donation of money to the school. What else is a hook? And also, I am Israeli and I speak, read and write in Hebrew as well. Would this be considered as a hook? Thanks!

It’s something you use to catch fish. You have to put some kind of bait on it, though, or else the fish don’t bite.

I think I’ve figured that much out. Haha

hook=something that really makes your application stand out.

Examples include: amazing at a particular sport/musical instrument etc. etc.

Would me being Israeli and the fact that I speak an “uncommon” language in Boarding school be a hook?

since you live in the US being a citizen from another country doesn’t help. Because hebrew is not used/taught in the schools i dont think it would help either. Perhaps your hook should be more of something you are passionate about, such as a subject, instrument, sport, etc

Ok, but I would think that that is the reason (the fact that it is not taught in schools) makes it a hook. Diversity is not only of color, but of languages and countless other “aspects” too.

I really think it would depend on the admission officer. My recommendation would be to have your hook be something you enjoy and are good at. If you enjoy hebrew than i think it is a great hook! Choosing to emphasize what you enjoy also makes the essay writing easier too!

A hook is something that school needs so u might be a hook at one school and not at another. I don’t think speekimg that language qualifies, it’s more like an interesting fact. Hooks are by far very few people and most generally athletes and sometimes musicians the school needs. I’m not an a/o who knows. But I know this, on paper regarding grades and teacher recs I am 1000 sure there were better applicants then me but I was contacted by the sports program first and was admitted, so go figure

andoverhopefulX, what sport(s) do you play?

My son was contacted the week before decisions last year by a coach who wanted us to send additional info etc. If you play a sport well, it can definitely make a difference,
