Simple question - I have no clue what a public "magnet school" is.

A school with a strong emphasis in a particular subject area, for example, music, science, drama, math, etc. Most of these schools select students through an application process instead of being assigned based on residence.

So, I guess its similar to a prep school in a sense.

For the derivation of the term "magnet school," think of the school "attracting" the strongest students in a particular subject.

You usually have to 'test' or 'apply' to get in. The students are some of the strongest in the district along with some interdistrict transfers.

Thanks to this thread, I just learned that I've been attending a "magnet school" for three and a half years :)

Lol, usually a school would want to publicize the fact that it's a magnet school.

yea...I went to a Magnet school for 5th and 6th grade for High Achievers (all subjects)

REALLY challenging...I got more work then than what I get in my AP courses now...
