can someone explain what is a prep school? are they private schools?

private high schools- usually boarding schools are discussed here…

do they have a higher percentage of students attending top universities than normal high schools?

Depends on what you mean by top. Overall, yes. But not insanely so- not everyone attends an Ivy, for example.

Prep school is short for College Preparatory School (You get why it’s shortened now, right?)

Most often they are private schools, except for really awesome magnet/charter public schools that do have the same emphasis on college prep as private schools. Parochial schools, also a form of private I guess, are also prep. Honestly, every single school in the world should be a prep school to a higher form of education. Now it’s just really used in the context of private schools.

Yes, often private schools get better matriculaton stats. I see you’re from SoCalish, so if you’ve heard of Harvard Westlake, you’ll understand. A well known boarding school around there is Webb, and maybe you’ve also heard of Cate. Those are prep schools as well, but they have a full boarding program for students across the world to enroll. Obviously if they have a wide range of students to pick from (even day schools like HW, seeing as LA is a huge place) then they will pick the smartest and brightest. With a bit of logic, it is doubtful there won’t be a spike in Ivy/Top 50 college acceptances.
