Maybe this forum could help out. I have a formal presentation on a project I did in the past. I think I'm going to mention a project from an internship. What would be considered proprietary? or something that I shouldn't talk about to another employer? The project isn't from govt or something delicate of that sort.

I have a similar question and have decided to contact the company to see if they have a problem with my mentioning a project I did with them. You could do that, also. If you are reluctant because you know they would say no, that probably means you shouldn’t talk about it!

Different companies have different policies about how you divulge information, and it is a good idea to contact the company you were working for before to make sure you understand their specific policy. A good rule is that you can talk about results but avoid certain details.

By this, I mean that it is probably good to avoid using actual names of companies, and it is also good to avoid divulging details that you only came upon because of a trusted relationship (obviously this includes trade secrets and specific financial numbers). Saying something like, “I helped to develop a program that reduced supply chain costs for a mid-sized company in the wholesale club sector by $15MM over the next five years,” is perfectly acceptable because it gives enough detail to be useful without revealing anything that could be considered proprietary.
