I am interested in working with business, specifically international businesses. I want to work in the marketing/advertising area as well. This is my overall focus.
I’ve read that a degree in marketing is terrible, and i have yet to consider a degree in advertising (i feel like i won’t learn anything truly useful if i get that)
Please help me out! And if you can, please go in detail as to why I should consider that major.
From a broad based perspective I would suggest an economics major plus fluency in at least one additional language. Basically you are looking to acquire skills…Economics gives you an overall understanding of markets and business with a good deal of quant and stat skills. With this skill set you will be able to work in many jobs.
Regarding marketing and advertising specifically–any major will allow you to go into those roles–economics, finance, business administration, marketing, communications, English. I would focus on a major that will give you some quant chops(e.g., econ, finance) because that is the way marketing is going—Big Data/data analysis. Marketing/advertising jobs also require good writing and speaking skills. These jobs can be competitive, and knowing a second language will also help differentiate you. Good luck.
There is no degree that is “terrible.” The large majority of people don’t end up working in their major field anyway, so why would it matter?
