What is a UM GPA??

" UM only counts full year, core curriculum courses, so unless you’re on block schedule, you’ll only use your final grade. "

Even for my full year courses, my school only gives grades per semester. We don’t get a final grade, just 2 semester grades. :[

"UM only counts full year, core curriculum courses, so unless you’re on block schedule, you’ll only use your final grade. "

Does this mean that UM doesn’t calculate my social studies electives like AP Gov and Sociology which were only one semester classes into my GPA?

^ That’s something I’ve wondered for a looong time, and now I’m still unsure. Some people have told me electives like that DO count, and some told me they don’t. Hope you figure it out =] I personally hope they do count it because it would add a lot of “4.0” to my average.

From 9th grade to now, I don’t think I’ve ever took a class that wouldn’t be included in UM GPA ( besides gym, which is required). Though this year I have to take intro computers, and intro arts ( requirements), both a semester long, I suspect they won’t be counted… though in all UM does not even include senior year grades with GPA.

I think they’d count academic electives, like government and sociology, but not non-academic electives like auto shop and tech ed.

I’m sure they will count your social science classes.

Ok. Anyways, my transcript only has semester grades on it. There’s no such thing as a “final grade”. Besides, how would they be able to calculate a final grade from an A- and a B+ when there are no percentages given?

help me!!! ^^post 20…

^ No idea…I’ve never known anyone who totally skipped a high school grade. When people I know are really smart, they just take college courses and dual enroll at a university, but not totally skip a grade. Have you been taking college courses? I don’t even know how you’d have the 4 years of English and all of the other requirements to even be eligible to apply…

yosup UM takes each semester grade and use it to calculate your UM GPA.

When someone said they only count full year ( which I’ve never read on), more than likely they are stating UM takes each semester grade ( of a course that takes two semester), and use the two semester grades to calculate your UM GPA.

Wrong. If you have semester grades, they use them to calculate your GPA. There are many classes that aren’t a full year ya know.

ok, so if i take the same 7 classes for 1 year, then there’s 14 semester grades. someone who has block scheduling and takes 4 courses a semester, 8 courses a year, has only 8 semester grades. how does that work?

i guess i don’t know about you guys. for my school, the transcripts only show my overall grades, and all APs and core classes are full year. i guess UM calculates it differently for different schools. ask your UM rep when they come to your school.

Elasticity and Neon Green, I would suggest that you call the admissions office and ask an admissions counselor for the answers to your questions. They do not look to keep the answers to these questions a secret and the answer from the posters will be less reliable. At my daughter’s high school there are semester grades and they average the semester grades - the admission rep has told us how they calculate the GPA. They count semester classes as long as they are core curriculum classes.

yosup, when colleges say 4 years of english, do they mean literally 4 years or just 4 credits of english.

^ 4 credits.

^^If the 4 credits represents four years of English, not TWO years of English : )
So, E., yes you need four years of English. If you chose to take two English credits in Jr. year for a total of 4, then you’re good.

However, if the reason that you’re asking is because you’ve skipped a year, you will need to get all your advice from the real deal (admissions) as your situation is unique. Because your situation suggests you are a standout scholar, I am optimistic that they would make provisions for odditites in your record, eg. only 3 yrs. of English. That said, it is better to ask!
Cheers,
K

That 4 years of English can’t be a hard requirement. Either that or they count classes like speech as English classes, as I only took 3 real years of English.

On their application, they say 4 years of English is required, and on the part where you list how many English classes you’ve taken, it says “(full year courses (4))”.

Well, I have 4 credits, and I took english over the summer before junior year.

lmao I have a 2.9 on their scale…I bombed 10th grade.
