I've been wondering about this... what is a year? Let's say student A takes Spanish year-long and covers half as much as student B who takes 2 different Spanish courses in one school year. Did student B take 2 years? Also, if you go AP Calculus BC from pre-cal, is AP Calculus BC 1 year of math or 2?

usually AP is the 4th or 5th year of a language

That doesn’t help much. So:
Student X
Freshman: Spanish I, Spanish II
Sophomore: Spanish III, AP Spanish language

Then the student has had 4 years of the language?

i mean, this is like asking what an “A” is..it varies

are you asking what a college considers a year in a college lang class? Probably twice as much as a regularly paced language hs class.

are you asking what a college considers a year in a hs?
usually the websites are specific, 2-3 years taken in hs recommended, or something

Do you mean for admissions purposes? A year means the length of a school year. It’s simple, don’t over think it. I don’t even see how you could start an AP class in the middle of the year; they wouldn’t allow it at our local high schools.

^ They would if your school had block scheduling. Mine does, so we have only 4 classes at a time, but classes are 90 min. long. If the OP’s school is on block scheduling, a semester-long 90 minute course is equivalent to a year of class at a school with periods, not blocks.

Thanks, that’s what I was looking for.
