What is academic renewal?

i am kinda confuse =/

if you received a 'D' or an 'F' in a class that you took 2 or more years ago, you can apply for academic renewal to, in a sense, erase the grade from your record... meaning that it'll still show up on your transcript, but won't be factored into your GPA by most public schools. privates, however, like USC, don't acknowledge academic renewal.

The only thing deterring me. Don't they think about the pre-law kids?! :(

thanks, here is my situation, i got a D in math last spring, but i took it again last semester and got an A, i did the grade line-out thing, is this academic renewal? or u have to wait 2 or more years like u have mentioned above ,Pinkerfloyd?

that's not AR. you have to file a petition to replace the unsatisfactory grade with the subsequent grade, which i guess is what you've already done? on your transcript, even unofficial online transcripts, under the failed grade, it should read something like, "course repeated subsequently (grades/units not used)."

academic renewal makes it so that you don't have to retake the class, but again, requires that two years have passed.

good luck.

thank you very much Pinkfloyd, have a nice day XD

Hijacking.

Say that I replace an F with an A using academic renewal, would that F still be counted towards LSAC GPA?

mordecai - again, that's not academic renewal.
if you take a course over again, there's a separate form you have to file for the subsequent course to replace the 'D' or 'F'.
it's a simple process.
just ask a counselor or admissions clerk for the form.

At PCC it is done automatically after your subsequent grade posts.

In addition, Academic Renewal typically removes the whole semester/quarter as part of your GPA without retaking the courses(this process doesn't usually let you choose individual courses to remove just by academic term). Repeating courses allows you to replace the grades from individual courses by retaking the course.

unless your received a C- or better in the given course.

Agreed, most colleges and universities do no allow you to repeat a course that you received a 'C' grade or higher in.

i got an F at a CC that i didn’t even mean to attend (long story), i signed up for the course I guess over the summer during registration and then returned back to my current city CC and totally forgot about being registered for the course, so I guess the teacher gave me an F.

I haven’t completed any units at the college I got an F in, so can I still academically renew?

Look up the policy at the school you want to petition for academic renewal. I believe most schools will specify how many units you should have completed, after that semester/quarter you’re trying to renew, with a certain GPA at any accredited school.

Uh oh. That doesn’t sound fun. What are the criteria for academic renewal?

I think most schools will allow you to petition for academic renewal if a certain amount of time has passed since that quarter/semester provided you have completed x amount of units during that time with x gpa (oftentimes a 2.0).

different schools have various rules, I’m confused. but nevertheless there is a california board policy set already.

i might have to do it at foothill, because it looks like delta only does AR for coursework taken there, and MJC requires me to take a lot of units prior, which isn’t happening.

At which school did you receive the F? That’s where you submit your petition for academic renewal so go by that school’s academic renewal policy.

thats the thing apparently other colleges can AR you if they have your transcript from THAT school…

That’s weird. Shrugs Contact your current school or the school where you received the F for more specific information on how to proceed. I think I read on here you currently attend Delta, which does not do that, so why don’t you contact your previous school?..

Did you receive the F at MJC? I looked at their [academic renewal form](http://www.mjc.edu/common/general/forms/Academic%20Renewal%20Application%201010.pdf) and it does not mention having to take units prior to the semester you are petitioning. It does seem to require you having completed units following that semester at MJC. Have you contacted MJC about your case? If you have completed all your other courses at Delta or wherever else with x amount of units and x gpa they might still approve your petition.

Edit: Actually, can you share with me the colleges you found that will allow you to petition for AR for courses taken at another school?
