What is an average music composition course like in College?

And how much technology/computer music is involved?
Looking into film scoring and trying to find a college that really incorporates what I’m looking for: a very technological approach, mostly done with DAWs, including sound design and sampling and things like that.

Many composition programs are classical but there are programs that would suit you. We might need to know more about you in order to recommend anything. There are many recent threads on this, too, if you search for “electronic” for instance. Let us know how selective a school you want and whether you want a conservatory of music school, preferred location, financial need etc.

For starters, Brown, NYU, Northeastern, UMass Lowell, UMichigan, Hartt, Belmont, USC (grad for film work though), and the obvious one, Berklee. Look at Bennington too.

With more info we can suggest many more.

Traditional composition programs do have technology/computer music but not always the kind you are referring to.

The PAT (Performing Arts Technology) program at University of Michigan sounds like a good fit. They have four different paths - one of which might suit you better than another. If you search this forum, there is lots of information about it. The San Francisco Conservatory now offers a tech composition degree, too.

I think PAT requires considerable acoustic composing w a portfolio, but check that out. KmcMom knows a lot about it.

Tech and electronic mean so many different things in the music composition field, so you need to read websites really carefully
