what is an internship?

what is an internship?
and do you get paid?

I advise an internet search for this one. Basically, an internship is job training in a field through experience (often involving doing basic tasks combined with learning about more complex ones and doing some once capable), and while you usually don't get paid (it's often more about experience), there are some "paid internships" out there.

I'd say that as far as getting paid goes, it really depends on what field you're in and what year you are. For instance, nonprofits/government/magazine internships frequently are unpaid, while finance internships pay quite well, as well as tech ones, and newspaper ones pay. (This is not always true of course; i have a paid internship at a nonprofit. But my government one is sadly unpaid.)

If you're a freshman and sophomore chances are your internship won't be paid (or at least higher chance) because it really is about gaining experience and trying out something you're interested in. However, once junior year hits, it's much more likely that you'll get a paid internship because it becomes a real future work possibility. For business majors, the summer after junior year internship is all important because if you do well at a major firm, it's very likely you'll get an offer.
