Hey I've lived in Atlanta all my life, so if anyone has any questions about the life in and around emory and Atlanta feel free to ask.

To quote an excellent piece of vocal literature (oxymoron), "where's all the mad rappers at?" No I'm serious; I have heard that Atlanta is like 'home-base' for rappers and that you can see them in the clubs.

Yea, well Atlanta is home to alot of rappers/hip hop artists, including Ludacris, Li'l John, Usher, Jermaine Dupri. I have seen Usher in a mall before, but I wouldnt say that you see them very much if ever. Atlanta is much much more that just rap. There is such a lively nightlife and promotion of the arts. It's also unique for a big city in that its very green (its official nickname is "the city in the forest"). There is so much to do no matter what you are into. Think of it as divided into neighborhoods like NYC, only more spread out. For instance, Little Fives is kinda off-beat hippieish, Virginia Highlands is very artsy, Buckhead is home to the Atlanta elite and is the major nightclub district, Midtown has a thriving gay community, there are all sorts of places to go. The HotATL is a city that is changing rapidly everyday. In this growing metropolis there are so many opportunities of which to take advantage. Come on down south and give it a try.

I've lived in Atlanta for about 9 years now, and to tell you the truth I can't wait to leave. However, it can be a fun city, just not my style. One thing I hate is that you can't walk anywhere; you can't survive here without a car. Also, there isn't a lot by way of culture- the High museum of Art as well as the Atlanta Symphony leave much to be desired. Good for shopping and concerts, though, and there are a lot of young people from Emory, Tech, Oglethorpe, GSU, Clarke, etc. On the other hand there is a thriving nightlife and the weather is great.

Chuckleybob, I am applying Early Decision so I hope to be able to give it a try. Haha. My uncle lives in Buckhead so I am pretty familiar with that area, but I keep hearing that the actual downtown part of Atlanta isn't the nicest area.

how is emory campus...???i heard they are so rich that they spend millions of dollars to rebuild their campus..

Yea, the actual downtown of ATL isnt that great. Its almost all a business district, so there isnt much in the way of entertainment. In fact, before the olympics came, it was somewhat dangerous to go down there unless it was during the daytime. However, since the olympics, things have improved tremendously. There is a movement to revitalize the entire city, especially downtown. Currently they are building what will be the world's most expensive aquarium and a new mueseum of Coca-Cola right next to Centennial Olympic Park. More and more entertainment venues are moving downtown, and I think it will be a great place to be in the next few years.

Emory Campus is an insanely beautiful campus. Almost every building is constructed in gray marble with Italian-style tiled roofs. The greenery is pruned and planted to an almost obsessive point (think Disneyworld). Overall, the campus itself is a wonderful place. However, it is not really in downtown ATL. From the balcony on the roof of the Woodruff Library you can catch a beautiful panorama of the Atlanta skyline. Emory is in a more residential section of Atlanta, but is a short cab or MARTA (our half-hearted attempt at a subway) ride from concerts, arts, and nightlife. Although, you need to take MARTA buses before you can get to a train station. So, all in all Emory is a beautiful campus and everything is very modern and up to date, but don't be fooled into thinking it is in downtown ATL. It is not an urban campus by any means. If you want that, go to GAtech or GSU.
