What is available for dancer?

My D has narrowed down to UW-Madison and UNC-CH with FSU and NYU on the back burners. What UW-Madison offers is a strong dance program. UNC-CH from what we can tell does not offer much in the way of dance. She is interested in continuing dance while at college. Aerobics and/or zumba are not the types of classes she is looking for. She wants to continue her technique and ballet. What are her options, if any, should she got to UNC-CH?

If dance is her primary field, then it might be advisable to go elsewhere. If dance is a secondary or minor interest, then UNC could work.

UNC offers several organizations relating to dance, though not all to ballet.

As you probably know, the Triangle is home to the American Dance Festival each summer.

For formal courses, check out Duke’s offerings in dance. Carolina students are allowed to take one class a semester over there, and the Robertson bus makes transportation easy. Duke has an exceptionally strong ballet program, or so I’ve heard.

I can possibly relate to your daughter. I currently am a pre-professional ballet dancer that has done the entire summer intensive thing every summer since I was 13 at ABT New York, the School of American Ballet, Chautauqua Festival, etc. and am now seriously looking at attending Chapel Hill next year. As warblersrule86 stated, you can probably take ballet at Duke which I know for a fact has a very good dance program, and you can take advanced or intermediate ballet at the Ballet School of Chapel Hill for an additional fee. (Buses are provided according to the Fall Schedule of 2010 http://regweb.unc.edu/courses/Fall2010ScheduleofClasses.pdf</a> ) You may also register to take modern or jazz classes at Chapel Hill for no additional cost. (According to the schedule…) Hope this helps!
