Hey everyone, I’m new to the board and this is my first post.
I am a junior in High School and I live out of state and I would like to attend a school out state. Lately I have been looking into the University of Alabama, and from what I have read up on after visiting the Universities web site and other sources, I must say I am really impressed with what I have read.

I have a few questions that I would like to ask, and if anyone can give me an answer that would be great!

First off, what are my chances of getting in?
- My high school GPA is a 3.5
- I am NOT in the top ten of my class but I am up there.
- I take the ACT in like a week and I’m feeling confident about it so we’ll see.
- I have all of my community service out of the way and I have done a lot more than what is required.
- I am active in school. Football, business leaders of America and different clubs.

So are my chances good?

Also I am considering rushing if I get into U of A. I understand that greek life is big at the University of Alabama and I think it would be a great fit for me. I really enjoy meeting new people and I like to stay busy with stuff. But since I am out of state, am I going to have a tough time getting into a good fraternity?

There isn’t really anything else that I can think of right now but if you guys have answers for me I would really appreciate it! THANKS!

If you do well on the ACT or SAT (take both!!!), you’ll get in. Since you’re a junior, start taking those tests soon. If you score high enough, you could get a scholarship. :)

Alabama uses a basic formula for admittance. Those who have over a 3.0 and a good test score automatically gain admittance. The school only looks at rank and ECs for kids who are “borderline.”

If Greek life is for you then you should rush. I don’t know if the Frats have a preview weekend in the spring (anyone know???).

Once you apply to the school, you should join the Alabama Class of 2015 and you’ll likely meet frat guys thru there - some online “pre-recruiting” can go on thru that.

If I do end up joining a fraternity will I have to live in the dorms since I will only be a freshman?

All freshmen start in the dorms. I’m not sure at what point you’d move into a frat house. Frat Rush doesn’t happen until after school starts anyway, so you wouldn’t know which frat you were pledging when school starts. However, once you pledge, you will have to submit a request to change your meal plan since you’ll now be eating many meals at the frat house.

**Are you familiar with Bama’s dorms? ** Bama has many awesome **private **room dorms that are in Super Suites. Each student has a private room in a 4 room suite that has a kitchenette, a living room, and 2 bathrooms. Here’s an example - scroll down for floorplan and more pics http://housing.ua.edu/ridgecrestsouth.cfm

It really isn’t hard to get into Bama at all. I think the average ACT for admittance is 21(that might have changed for the higher though). So, if you get at least a 21 you’ll for sure get in. Scholarships are a different story though. You shouldn’t have a hard time getting into a fraternity if you’re out of state, but you’ll have to be done here a few times over the summer and Greek preview weekend for sure, but that’s in your senior year.

Where are from, by the way?

I’m from Nebraska.

An ACT 21 is in the bottom 25% of admitted UA students. The average is about an ACT 25, which is in the 75th percentile. The top 25% of admitted students have an ACT 28-36.

Alabama accepts 60% of its applicants. See below for details.

Freshman Acceptance
Total applicants: 18,500
Total applicants who are accepted: 11,172

BTW…Alabama in on track to receive more than 22,000 applications during this application season, so selectivity will increase.

whoops, my bad lol.

When is Greek preview weekend for frats? Is it the same weekend as (sorority) Panhellenic Preview Weekend?

Wait so if I am thinking about joining a frat, I have to come down for a preview day in Spring of my Senior year of High School? Is it normal to do the preview day when you are a freshman at UA, and rush when you’re a soph? Chance are I might not be able to make the 12 hour drive during Sr. year for one weekend, so I don’t know if I could do it freshman year.

Sorry, I’m not really too familiar with the rushing process.

I’m not even sure if there is a Greek Preview for frats. I know there is one for sororities.

Hopefully someone can weigh in here about this, and whether it’s necessary to attend in order to pledge.

If there is a Greek Preview for frats, is it the same day as the Panhellenic preview?

Mom,

Actually, UA’s acceptance rate went below 60 per cent this fall. It was 60 per cent for fall of 2008. The rate continues to decrease cause the number of applications continue to rise, and the percentage of students actually enrolling is fairly stable. It is the high yield which prevents the ACT avg. from being higher than it is. But you are right that that average will rise with increased selectivity.

:)

So what is it now? 58% acceptance ?? 55% acceptance?? Have the numbers come out yet? I got my numbers from Princeton Review, but the data may be from Fall 2008.

So nobody knows when rush is for fraternities? And how are the students at Alabama, are they overall pretty friendly? And is it easy to meet new people?

People in Alabama are very friendly, it is pretty easy to make friends if you make the effort and be a friend in return. According to [Greek Life](http://www.greeklife.ua.edu/ifcrecruitment.html) pledge season starts in September and can last up to 8 weeks with recruitment in spring and summer. When they get the Fall 2010 application for Greek Organizations goes online, pay the $20 and register to get on their mailing list.

nebjohn…

I read that the frat pledge **season ** starts a week or so before Labor Day weekend, but Rush starts after Labor Day.

A guy is a pledge for 8 weeks and then initiated.

And, yes, as soon as the Fall 2010 app goes online, register to get updates. :)

You will never meet friendly people than the ones in the South. Seriously.

Although most rush and accept bids during their senior year of high school, many freshman (particularly those from out-of-state) rush during the Spring. The Rush Chairs that I have spoken to understand that not everyone can rush during high school, and they will not penalize you for rushing during your freshman year.

I’m not completely sure about this, but my understanding is that Fraternities and Sororities have to meet a certain upperclassman quota every year which would mean that you have a better chance of getting into the one you want. Does anyone else know if that is true?

Greek Preview weekend is on March 27.

*Although most rush and accept bids during their senior year of high school, *

What??? This isn’t true at all. No one “rushes” while they’re a senior in high school. Sorority rush is in August (the week or so before school starts) and Frat rush is around Labor Day. The earliest anyone can rush is as a Freshman in college.

Ramirez is confused. Greek Preview weekend is NOT Rush. Rush is in the fall and that’s when bids are issued.

Greek Calendar - From UA’s website.

March 27 - Greek Preview Weekend
August 8-15, 2010 - Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment (Rush)

Fraternity formal recruitment (Rush) is held during September (but can begin at the end of August).

Well, considering I have personally spoken to many rushees who are still in high school and many of my friends accepted bids during their senior year, I’m pretty sure not confused.
