Besides basketball and football, academic wise?

everything!

we actually arent very good at basketball...that should probably read hockey and womens soccer

BC doesnt really have particular strengths for academics (although i think bio is getting up there as well as chem if you look at Fulbrights), it is just very well rounded. the schools with the top departments are generally the ones with top graduate schools, which BC isnt very interested in.

yea the basketball team made it to the NCAA tournment and the got beat by Georgetown, one of the best teams in the country.

BC is ranked #14 in the country for its business program at Carroll

I dont know where you got that ranking from. US News has consistently ranked Carroll between 25 and 30 for undergrad business.

and if you actually know anything about basketball..BC is not a good team. The game against Georgetown might have been close, but any knowledgable fan knows that game was never in doubt. In terms of talent, BC was more like the 10th or 11th best team in the ACC this year, possibly worst.

ckmets13, why so anti-BC? The business school ranking was from the recently released Newsweek rankings (much more thorough than US News IMO). They ranked Carroll #14.

ck doesn't know what s/he's talking about.

Carroll is #14:

Econ and finance are both top-10 programs. also s/he's wrong on sciences. bio is decent but physics and chem are much stronger and have better national reputations according to my advisor (who went to Caltech).

no way, you dont know anything about basketball. BC was a great team! and Dubley is one of the best players in the ACC or country!

at least spell his name right. but i can name 20 players in the ACC with more talent than Dudley. In fact I will do it right now

Tyrese Rice, BC
Ishmael Smith, Wake Forest
Kyle Visser, Wake Forest
Ben McCauley, NC State
Brandon Costner, NC State
Josh McRoberts, Duke
Greg Paulus, Duke
Demarcus Nelson, Duke
Gerald Henderson Duke
Tyler Hansbrough, UNC
Brandan Wright, UNC
Tywon Lawson, UNC
Wayne Ellington UNC
Reyshawn Terry, UNC
Sean Singletary, UVA
JR Reynolds, UVA
Zabian Dowdell, VT
Javarris Crittenton, GT
Thaddeus Young, GT
Anthony Morrow, GT
Al Thornton, FSU
Toney Douglas, FSU
DJ Strawberry, Maryland
James Gist, Maryland
Jack McClinton, Miami

i dont even know how many that is, but they all have more basketball talent than Jared Dudley. I don't understand why people consider Dudley so great, as in one of the top 10 players in the country. He is a very good player, but not elite by any stretch. Tyrese is much closer to that level.

And I am a physics major, so dont tell me that I am wrong about physics. Chem is a strong program, as is bio, physics is getting there but it is not there yet. Just look at the faculty and course offerings compared to the real top physics programs and you will see why.

As far as business rankings go, choose any ranking you want to look at. I can also give you a ranking that lists the top 200 universities in the world and BC is nowhere to be found. I just choose to be consistant and use US News as my rankings source..not that it matters really, Carroll is a good business school, not elite.

ckmets13, have you thought about transferring since you are apparently not happy with BC. Don't just complain, take action.

I am most likely transferring..but i said nothing bad about BC in this thread other than that the basketball team was overrated.

As far as business programs go, I dont know how you can say one ranking is more accurate than another. Carroll is regionally prestigious, in the northeast it will be considered a lot higher than 29. But if you want to work in the midwest or the west coast, Carroll is not at the level where it is going to help you nationally, at least not yet. It will just be another decent business school.

newsweek just ranked them 14 not 29...

so other than Carroll, how is academics otherwise? and what about studying abroad...hows their program

that was business week...the authority on college rankings is and always will be US News, and Carroll is 29th..check back in August

As a student in csom, I can say that it is good school. However it is nothing amazing. There is nothing here at BC that you cannot get at any other top school. Our recruiting is good, but somewhat limited to the northeast. The best csom professors teach the grad students and do research. They don't bother with the undergrads (there are some notable exceptions). If you want professors that you can get to know personally, and who have office hours all the time, I'm not sure if this place is for you. The advising in csom is also very poor. Although the peer advisors are generally good in comparision to faculty advisors. With that being said, in fulton hall every thursday there is free coffee and cookies....thats always something to look forward to.

I would love to hear about negative aspects of Boston College, especially from ckmets13.

ckmets,

Not sure why you are so down on Dudley and the status of the basketball team. BC is not a school where they rent a basketball player for a year or two. Dudley, and before him Craig Smith, both came from outside the region, stayed 4 years. Smith is now in the NBA and I suspect, one way or another, Dudley will be too.

Al Skinner has a long reputation of finding diamonds in the rough. He was doing it at URI before BC. Dudley is a perfect example of that. Unrecruited out of high school Skinner takes him, he stays for 4 years and gets named the Player of the year in the ACC.

Sure the BC basketball team did not do as well as many would have liked. However, I think it is critical that people recognize that Al Skinner and the university sent their player with the most upside packing. Sean Williams had his second chance and could not stay out of trouble. At a different school he may still be there. I think this is something of which BC should be proud.

Regarding the rankings, while I too like US News, for Business Schools I would put more weight in the opinion of Business Week. 14 is quite a high ranking. Surprised that they were more highly rated than Marshall at USC . . .
