What is being pre-med like?

The number of people that I’ve seen crying from class:

Chem 1A- 2. Both cried after the final.

Chem 3A- 2. One after getting her midterm back and the other was complaining about the class in the dorm and broke into tears.

Bio 1AL- 3. 2 words: Mike Meighan.

Bio 1B- 4. This class has a surprisingly crappy curve and some of the most useless material. I saw 2 crying when I took it and the other 2 when I was an UGSI.

It’s a strange feeling to see people cry over grades.

oh boy. crying helps.

i agree with tastybeef. Seeing people cry just makes me sorta cringe inside. I just think, “really?”

i usually just sigh, and then laugh it off.

^you make it sound like it’s somewhat better to be more cynical

Tbqh, I think crying over Berkeley grades is just dumb. Feel heartbroken sure. But to break down and cry. …

it’s hard not to cry when your premed dreams shatter like that… i dont know anyone who wouldn’t cry…

is the world of med school so cruel such that one grade will destroy your dreams?

I think part of it is that to get into Berkeley, you were probably one of the top students at your high school, you generally got A’s and did well in every class. Once you come to Berkeley, everyone is smart, everyone is the same as you (generally), and the tests are hard. So getting that first C or D on an exam that’s worth 1/3 of your grade may be quite disheartening, some students don’t realize that there’s something called a curve at the end… and that C + 2 other exams might actually be an A in the class.

One grade on an exam may not destroy your dreams, neither will one grade in a class. But when it keeps happening, then it really will. Average GPAs to get into A medical school is approximately 3.6. Berkeley students, having aimed for the best for undergrad, naturally aim for the best in medical schools, where the GPA averages out to mid 3.8s.

You’ll do better than 99% of the predmeds for sure – It’s almost certain that you won’t miss your goal in life.

what if you are one of the premeds who wants to get into ANY medical school and not necessarily a top-tier one…how much does GPA matter?

i mean, i am willing to work hard and all as an undergrad now but the way i see it, what medical school you went to only matters for your first job as a physician and after that it is based on your experience, right? so it really doesnt matter what school you go to-what is the point of killing yourself for every plus or minus?

Bragging rights my man. Bragging rights.

you mean woman, lol…well im ok without the bragging rights-so maybe i will start studying less for the chem 3a midterm monday, hahahah.

I don’t have a desire to go to the best medical school either, I just want to be a doctor! Ship me out to Jamaica if you must…

People go to medical school for many reasons… most common would be to be a physician, in which case, the medical school you go to doesn’t really matter. Going to harvard med school won’t make you a better physician. Other possibilities are medical research and academic medicine, in which it does matter which med school you go to, and here, going to HMS opens up so many opportunities for you in terms of grants, job availability, etc.
