What Is Bugging Me About Reed

Wow… that is some accusation that I “made up” that this is in the student newspaper. I happen to have brought the copy home with us. So if you would bother to go back to The Reed College Quest, Vol. 203 Issue 7, dated October 12, 2012, page 8, you would find an entire page called “CSO Blotter” that lists all the CSO calls for October 1-7, 2012. Here are some sample quotes:

I could go on… but I think these are sufficient examples. It does not appear that drug violations were issued, so your statistics on the violations are pretty meaningless (lots of use, little successful enforcement). I really don’t intend to rip on Reed with this, but when you accuse me of lying…

I can’t say I ever smelled marijuana @ Reed, although my H did see two students taking a bong underneath the blue bridge once & one of the cross canyon dorms used to have a hookah sitting on its front porch.

But while I would agree that people under 21 should not be using substances, I am not under the delusion that a college can or should, make them abstain.

Logical consequences seems to work pretty well in this case.

I’m with Intparent on this. Rhg, your charges - and more importantly - your manner of communicating are way over the top, highly inappropriate, and distract from anything you are trying to say.

And your point? That laptop and bicycle theft are also significant issues at Reed? Yes, they are. That the student paper likes to mock incidents as they list them? Yup, nothing really wrong with that, and not unexpected. Continuing to bump this thread as you are doing probably does not enhance Reed’s reputation. So if you are trying to help it in some way, this probably isn’t a good approach.

I’m just amused by the subtle implication that those who score below a 700 on SAT math are somehow intellectually lacking. The inability to quickly computate contrived mathematical questions is a general reflection on intelligence.
I guess I have lucked my way through quantum physics and philosophy by being lucky. MIT must have whiffed when they asked a group of students including myself to present on aqua-farming. I also managed to trick the poet laureate of Maine into thinking my poetry decent. Que sera sera, tis better to be lucky than good, no?

Have you read the whole thread? The initial question I asked about test scores did NOT play into the decision for my D to not apply to Reed.

I did and I understand. It is the way you phrased the question. I imagine it was by accident, but you questioned the ability of a college to hold an intellectual environment if the math scores were under 700 on average.
“The average SAT math is under 700… my kid very much wants an intellectual environment, but really trying to get at the question of intelligence AND intellectualism. Can anyone comment on this?”
I’m commenting that any such assertion or implication is ridiculous or insulting. I honestly believe you didn’t intend to have it interpreted that way, but it is written in a way that puts insulting words in your mouth.

Mmm… did not mean it as insulting, but I think it is a valid question when comparing it to some of the other colleges with very intellectual reputations (eg, Swarthmore or U of Chicago). There is “intellectual” and “pseudo-intellectual”. At the time I originally posted, I was trying to figure out which category Reed falls into. Ultimately you will see from post #47 that it didn’t really matter in her final decision process, and I will leave that to others to debate whether it matters or not if they wish to.

This thread is so OVER!
[Portlandia - OVER - YouTube](<a href=“Portlandia - OVER - YouTube”>Portlandia - OVER - YouTube)

I have nothing to say Except I hope the student who had her laptop " stolen" when she left it in the library checked in Greywood.

Students leave their stuff unattended all the time- generally much longer than “10” minutes.

However, the library staff is very good about gathering it up and taking it to security for safekeeping.

The last person I heard about who had a laptop moved in this way, was furious with the librarian because she closed it and his work was subsequently lost.

Poor guy. I guess he will remember that the library isn’t his bedroom& the librarian isnt his mom.
