What is Columbia College's rank in the science

(Nanotech, particle physics, etc)?

Probably very good. COlumbia has been known for top science programs adn researchers ( Eric Kandel for example).

For quantum physics you also have Brian Greene, though ive heard mixed opinions about his effectiveness as a teacher.

ahh..i c. But does anyone have an actual rank? Like MIT ranks #1 in engineering and Stanford 2.
So, in the science, where does columbia rank? thanks.

Why are you so obssesed with ranks? Its a solid program.

collegehopeful78, thats exactely what I was wondering.
You know what they need to do?
They need to expunge the whole "americas best college" US news ranking thing and lets see what the student's preferance in college will be.

All you need to know is that they have world class professors and a rigorous course of study. I doubt students at MIT wake up in the morning saying " I love the engineering program. We're ranked #1 above Stanford. My life has turned out so well."

Trust me, with all the intense studying I hear MIT kids go through, I highly doubt those words will ever come out of their mouths. Probably after graduating

a physics or app.physics major could probably answer this better but from my limited experience (only a soph) it seems the astrophysics subcategory is the strongest at columbia....

but i dont actually know this, just casual observation

Says who? "Engineering" is like 20 different disciplines.

Is English your native language? Your use of "the science" is quite awkward.

Columbia2002, you're so Naive
Like literally you're Toddler Naive

Engineering is overall the aspects that it consist of that makes MIT #1 DUH!

"In the science" is a term used all around, probably not everyone says it but ask british people especially, they should know!

ughhhh....Arrogant & Naive

I'm indian. Indians have been influenced by the British...that's why we spell "gray" = "grey"

So ya...I see everyone's point anyhow. Ranks don't really matter. All we know is columbia is pretty good in almost everything. Thanks. New questions = What is the School of General Studies? What's the point of it when Columbia College is there? Besides, why are there Computer Science courses in both SEAS and Columbia College? Which is better?

except of course C02 is an engineer, so i think he would know what engineering is....

I think SEAS ranks 14th in engineering, something like that...but of course this is according to US News and there is no shortage of threads about how skewed their rankings are. Also keep in mind that those rankings are for grad programs and usually reflect the amount of grant money and the type of research etc that goes on there, really has nothing to do with teaching at all.

yeah but rankings show how much good quality engineering you learn. I mean seriously there is a difference in learning computer science in MIT and taking the same course in UC Riverside or something. Rankings could be quite helpful...

well they'r helpful when you're comparing school #1 and school #50 but they really dont tell you much at all if you are comparing schools that r relatively close to one another the differences are hard to see. Also, your whole premise is incorrect since, as i mentioned before, the rankings reflect mostly on research opportunities and have very little to do with what actually goes on in the classroom.

Also COlumbia isn't UC riverside so who cares.

As opposed to "bad quality engineering"? You probably learn less at a top school because the professors are more likely to be horrible teachers and not care about teaching.

hmm...are you sure? I thought rankings represent how well the courses are taught or something....i guess its just me.

no, absolutely not....and i didnt want to say it but what C02 said is not far from the truth
