What is considered a heavy unit load?

I know that 12 is considered full time, and I've heard that 15 is average. As of right now I'm enrolled in 17 units: French 5, a writing class, and two English courses. I'm a new transfer student, and the most I've ever taken at once is 15, but at UCSC literally every class was 5 units so I was only taking 3 classes at a time. Is 17 units doable?

different colleges have different standards.
like letter and science is 21 max without petition.
engineering is 18 i think without petition to the dean.

I’ve taken 16-17 units almost every quarter I’ve been at UCSB, even my first one, and it is definitely doable. For me, the extra class forced me to really manage my time and study adequately for all my classes. I actually do worse when I take less units.

I average between 3-4 classes, never over 15 units here at ucsb. Cant imagine even going for another half a unit. I think it depends on your major/capabilities. I used to have 17 units at my community college, but things have become a bit more complicated. I’d say play it safe for your first quarter here tho.
