Based on how well I am doing so far I predict I will graduate with a GPA of approximately 3.5

For Petroleum engineering is that a good GPA or not?

If not what would be considered a decent gpa that I should be proud of?

For Petroleum engineering is that a good GPA or not?

If not what would be considered a decent gpa that I should be proud of?

Anything over 3.5 is very good from a reputable engineering school.

A 3.5 is a really good GPA! It should definitely help you get a job and yea, you should be proud of yourself.

Anything above a 3.0, IMO, is acceptable. A 3.5 is very good. You’ll be fine.

What do you consider reputable schools? Just curious. Would UCSD be considered reputable?

^I’d consider UCSD a reputable school. It’s generally considered top-15 or top-20…

Well, I don’t know anything about them but the website says they’re 11th in the nation, so yeah, I’d call them reputable. I don’t want to pick a number that a school has to be ranked since my opinion doesn’t really count for all that much, but if a school is top 100 or so I’d say it’s pretty good.

In reality anything over 3.0 is going to be fine, but over 3.5 is going to be even better. Those are really the only two cut-offs I’ve seen for jobs or starting pay.

What website?

Their website.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It’s a relief to know that I shouldn’t be worried about my 3.57 GPA. Its just that recently I had my friend trying to explain to me that 3.57 wasn’t a that great a GPA, even for engineering.

My friend is a business major though.

Ignore your friend, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Yeah, 3.57 is really good. You’re not going to get passed up for a job due to GPA if it’s that high. Your friend has no clue, but that is of course why you’re in your respective majors…

I got into a bunch of grad schools with a 3.3, FWIW.

A 3.57 GPA isn’t bad, but there are 43 better ones.

Or 430 better ones depending on how many decimals your school carries out to.

Is UF considered a top school?

Yes, UF is good. Remember though everybody, going to a good school only means you’re somewhere that gives you the TOOLS to be successful. A good GPA from a good college might not be enough.

And to be honest there aren’t that many GPAs ‘better’ than a 3.57. Nobody is going to care whether you have a 3.5 or a 3.8.

Not entirely true. Places like MIT and CalTech may care depending on several other factors, and fellowship programs definitely care.

Fair enough. I never looked into academia so whatever I say just applies to industry.

There are a few jobs on the UMich engineering recruitment website I’ve seen which have a minimum required GPA of a 3.6 or 3.7.
