so I’m not sure if I would be considered to be a first generation college student. my parents were both immigrants but my mother decided that she would go to a free college to get her associate’s degree in accounting. would her going to a 2 year college mean that I’m no longer first generation?
Ask admissions, but I would guess you are probably not first generation.
On the application you will be asked to write each parent’s level of education and then each college will determine if you are first generation based on its own criteria. There is no box to check to say if you are first generation.
The program I volunteer for has a 4 year degree classification. For us, you would be first generation.
Take a look at the colleges you are interested in and see if they have multicultural/diversity fly in programs. See if first generation is part of the group they are trying to recruit. If so, ask the recruiter if you would be considered eligible. Find out about the application process if you are eligible.
Just call up the school, varies from school to school.
