What is CS like at UNC Chapel Hill?

I am a HS senior and I have been accepted to UNC and NCSU for computer science. I have heard a lot about NCSU’s computer science program, but not too much about UNC. Can anyone give any insight on CS at UNC? All I have heard is that UNC has an abstract approach to CS. Any advice and info is much appreciated, especially info on careers after graduation and recruiters going to the campus.

@MaybeUNC2022 My son is a Junior at UNC and is in the CS BS program with a minor in math. I think he has mentioned that UNC CS program teaches the theory. He said they were quite different a while back when were talking about different schools. Did you look on UNC website?

As far as recruiters there are always emails going out for jobs and intern recruitment. If you apply yourself you will have no trouble getting a job in CS from either school.

@Nurse001 Thanks for the reply! I have checked out the CS department’s website to learn more about the curriculum. It seems UNC definitely has more breadth than State. That is to say that they have a wide variety of different computer science classes beyond the requirements, which I guess is why so many people have described the program as “abstract.” NC states is very heavy on the engineering aspects of computer science since CS is housed in the engineering school. They both will definitely offer a great education, but I can seem to figure out which will be more beneficial to me.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing is UNC is very top heavy on math. Some people realize that a little too late and have to go for the CS BA instead of the BS. Keep that in mind too. I am not sure how much is required at State. My son happens to be good in math but some of his friends had to switch to the BA as they were having trouble with the upper level math.

great to know that
