What is DSP really used for?

I am required to take 3 courses in my EE undergrad program outside the core courses, and so far I was set on taking microprocessor systems & interfacing, digital signal processing with applications, and transmission of information.

The only thing I'm unsure of is digital signal processing.

My focus was to get into the the embedded systems field, communications field, or possibly the RF engineering field - I just don't know how DSP will help me with that.

I have the option of taking a course on microwaving engineering which I am sure covers RF engineering - should I take this course instead of DSP?

Whether or not you should take RF instead of DSP depends on which of the 3 concentrations you listed (embedded, communications, RF) interest you the most.

DSP has a lot to do with communications, less to do with embedded, for instance.
RF has nothing to do with embedded.
