What is each Big Ten university known for?

Post the ranking of each Big Ten school. Pretty sure there are only two, maybe three highly ranked schools in the Big Ten.

^ informative, I believe there are over 2,000 institutions of higher learning in the U.S. Being ranked in the Top 100 (even though it may not be highly ranked by your definition) is still in the top 5% nationwide
far from “mediocre”.

Northwestern #12
Michigan #29
Wisconsin #45
Penn State #47
Illinois #47
Ohio State #56
Purdue #56
Minnesota #64
Iowa #72
Indiana #75
Michigan State #79

informative, UIUC, Wisconsin and PSU are all ranked among the top 50. How is that “mediocre”? 11 of the 12 Big 10 schools are ranked among the top 75.

New QS/THES 2010 ranking of the world’s top 200 universities:

Michigan #15
Northwestern #26
Wisconsin #48
Illinois #63
Purdue #87
Minnesota #96
Penn State #98
Ohio State #125
Iowa #188

Throw in their CIC colleague the University of Chicago at #8, and this is an impressive listing. Take this ranking for what it’s worth (probably not much), but it does at least suggest that these schools individually and as a group have a pretty impressive level of global recognition.

As someone who has been following this whole Big Ten expansion event religiously, I can sincerely say that part of this mix-feeling towards Nebraska into the Big Ten is the direct result of last minute decision by the conference. Prior to the official announcement in June, most media outlets had Big Ten either seeking schools to the East if not the South , in addition to Notre Dame. It was not until the week after Big XII AD issued the conference ultimatum did the Godfather himself - Jim Delany made his move. Therefore, literary for nearly 6 months, most Big Teners including myself were totally in the dark. Hence, please excuse us for the ‘late’ welcoming of the Huskers to our family. Anyway, Go Big Ten & Go Huskers!! lol

P.S. OOOops!! Wrong Thread

Average ranking of 57.20. That is mediocre when you consider that really only the top 100 schools should be ranked to begin with.

The numbers that UCBChemEGrad gave were undergraduate rankings by US News for a certain year only. If you look at graduate and research quality–which is what academics means to academics–you can easily find 8 or 9 Big Ten schools that are better than schools such as Dartmouth, Rice, and USC. The last NRC report may be 16 years old, but it’ll show you that historically the Big Ten members have been known to researchers as academic powerhouses. By calling most of them “mediocre”, you are not being “informative” at all.

Well, we know where you are coming from then. The fact would be any Top 100 school is a great school out of 3500 colleges in the US. Just as any Top 100 HS football player is highly regarded by all the colleges playing football or any head of a Top 100 company is considered a highly accomplished executive.

When you look at the rankings, the Big Ten universities are pretty average academically as a whole, but NW and Michigan are good schools. The rest are your typical state schools.

“Informative,” you are incredibly poorly informed. Most of the Big Ten schools are among the very best public universities in the country. They are not “typical state schools,” they are “exceptionally good state schools.” US News, for example, ranks 107 public universities as the “top public schools.” In that ranking, 1 Big Ten public (Michigan) is in the top 4; 4 are in the nation’s top 15; and 6 are in the top 18. Apart from newcomer Nebraska, no Big Ten school ranks lower than #34 in that group, i.e., within the top third of the group identified by Us News as the nation’s “best” public universities.

Compare, for example, the SUNY system: No SUNY campus ranks HIGHER than #34, the very bottom of the traditional Big Ten. U Del, often cited on CC as a strong public university, ranks #32, i.e., right around the very bottom of the Big Ten. The highest-ranking New England public is UConn at #27, again near the bottom of the Big Ten, but the more “typical” New England publics are in the #41-or-lower range, well below Big Ten standards. Most Southern states have state flagships ranking well below Big Ten standards; same is true in the Great Plains and Mountain West regions. Indeed, only California, Virginia, and North Carolina can boast public universities that rise to Big Ten levels, though Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Washington State come close.

In the social sciences and humanities, Michigan, Chicago, and Wisconsin are outstanding across the board, as is Northwestern in many fields but not quite as consistently. A number of other schools have outstanding programs in some areas—e.g., Minnesota in Psychology and Economics, Illinois in Psychology–or are solid in many fields (e.g., Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana). Iowa and Michigan State are a bit spottier. Purdue, best known as an engineering school, is not strong in many social science/humanities fields.

Bottom line: The Big Ten is outstanding in engineering in general, and in almost every engineering specialty. The top Big Ten engineering schools, Illinois, Michigan, and Purdue, are competitive with the likes of MIT, Caltech, UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Cornell across the board. Wisconsin and Northwestern are just a whisker behind, and Penn State, Minnesota, and Ohio State are also very strong. The Big Ten has 7 engineering schools ranked in the nation’s top 25 for undergraduate engineering education; in contrast, the Ivy League has 2 (Cornell at #8, tied with Purdue, and Princeton at #11). Penn State engineering is better than UPenn engineering; the 7th-place Big Ten engineering school, Minnesota, is ranked ahead of Columbia; and the 9th-place Big Ten school, Michigan State, is ranked on a par with Brown and Yale.

Yup, “typical state schools,” pretty “mediocre.” Not.

Uh huh
and there are really only 2 to 4 schools super strong across the entire academic realm.
