what is emory really like?

anyone is welcome to give feedback. :)

i often hear people saying that Emory's student body is self-segregated, and not very friendly, per say. And that many students think of transferring to another school once a their time at Emory. and the administration doesn't care about students that they spent too much money to building campus? and it is full of ivy-rejects (which i found doubtful) , etc....

I mean, Emory is ranking 18th, so it cannot be that bad. There have to be nice things about Emory, right?

To current students: what made you want to study at Emory? What are some things unique about Emory that are not common in other schools?

And any additional comments about Emory are welcome! Thanks!!

well i'm going to emory... no reason whatsoever. maybe because it has strong business school.
but then yes, it's pretty self-segregated (although u can get out of norm(?)) and many people think of transferring to northwestern (especially pre-meds) and some people just love emory, but some people are apparently ivy-rejects (they make it known on the first day of school...)
emory is unique in that it's close yet not too close to atlanta (it's in suburban area) so nice job opportunities and lots of things to do when u're free but u can still concentrate in ur studying.
and administration DOES care about its students. but then u have to reach out to them. not the other way around.

thank you..any other thought? any body?

I found them extremly friendly. Btw it's per se, smarty pants take latin emory would be astonished at ur common misconception. Just kidding by really it's per se

I thought the kids at Emory seemed snobbish, stuck-up and very unfriendly. During my visit, no one seemed really interested in me, just into what THEY were doing. When I asked for help, most acted like it was asking for $500 dollars. This was a stark contrast to Rice and after visiting Emory, I made the decision to no longer apply to Emory at all (was planning to do ED before) and now I know that I'll be happy attending Rice this fall.

I got the complete opposite type of treatment when I visited Emory, even when I just randomly popped onto campus to talk to students, they were really friendly & helpful.

Lol, I guess it just depends on the person & why it's so important to visit the school.

pyles, just wondering, what exactly do you mean by everybody seemed snobbish and not interested in you? In my experience, Emory is plenty friendly, although it might not seem that way depending on if you went say on some cold damp day when students are trying to get to class or are busy doing their own thing. I'm kinda surprised how a lot topics on this board seem so negative toward Emory. It has its problems like any other school, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Of everyone I know at Emory like half of them really liked it from the beginning and half of them thought of transferring. So yeah it depends.

Since we're on the Emory board you'll find that most of the posters love Emory, but post something about Emory on the general boards and you'll get plenty of negative responses.

In my opinion the administration can really really suck (whenever I needed help I got redirected at least 3 times before I would advance further in solving my problem) but other say they like it.

i took a visit to emory this fall as a recruited athlete and hated it.....student body was very unfriendly and prob the nerdiest bunch of kids ive ever met.....seemed like the geeks with no friends in high school....before visiting it was one of my top choices and after spending one day on campus it was off my list entirely.

lol @ tennisboy1005.
Comon man, you can't say other people in EMory are nerdy like too just because you saw some. I am sure you can find some chill people there.

Unfriendly might not be the word. Maybe they are just shy or don't have people skills. There is a difference between that and being unfriendly.

I'd rather be a nerd than an arrogant jerk who thinks they're better than everyone.

The people that go to Emory from my school are quite the friendly bunch. My friend Gina [a freshman at Emory this year] was the president of her junior class and of Speech and Debate and she was one of the most talkative people I've ever met.

There are always different sorts of people at every college. Diversity is important and makes people more open minded and culturally aware.

I'll say something about politics.

I visited Emory on November 5 and everyone was great, very friendly. And there were celebrations in the streets. I heard "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on a boombox, and I had to smile. Nice dorms, too (I found out in UF that you really take a sink for granted). Great impression on me. Of course, in every college, you're gonna have people of all stripes. And, at a top college, you'll get more nerds. I like it, but I can see how others wouldn't.

BTW, I also visited Wash U, and the "Ivy reject" feel was more obvious in the students there. Both schools are great, though.

Most of the people I know who want/ed to transfer were looking for a "state school experience." Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of students who go out 3-4 nights a week, but our frat parties don't have ying-yang twins performing (Auburn) and our homecoming does not have kanye or lil' wayne (vandy). Not having a football team is a big negative as well.

I would say schools like UVA, USC, UNC, Duke, and Vandy are all ranked around Emory for academics but offer more in terms of nightlife/sports etc.

With that said, Emory is much smaller than any of those schools and has a great location that is close to almost anything you would want (downtown atlanta, pro sports, local restaurants, bars, clubs, etc).

Since Emory is a different for everyone, it is difficult to give one answer. But if you have specific questions I will do my best to answer them

LOL:

I almost typed a post just like this...

Latin students unite!

I like Emory because it is more down to earth and less party focused. Not having a sports team is a plus as well. Emory students are, in general, easy going which is a great trait to have.

Emory is wonderful...I feel very fortunate to have two friends I am extremely close with and about another 10 that I am close with. Just come visit, you'll see :)

you can find anything you want at Emory you just have to look. If youre rich and you want rich, snobby friends- you can find them. If youre a good ole southern kid, weve got those too. If you wanna be a nerd, a jock, a frattie, whatever- weve got it. If youre religious, your options are endless. For those of you who ran into rude people or had other similar experiences on a visit or whatever- I feel ya. I didnt fit in well here for quite a while and people here still really frustrate me sometimes. I promise though, if you come you will find your niche and you will be fine.
