the justice system is a joke at best.

Well, for me god is a person who sacrifised his life for the good of the people. So it inspires us to do good for the people and sacrifise for others and not be such so selfish.

I believe in him because I’d like to hope that the lives undergone here are not the end. It’s difficult for me to convince myself of certain aspects associated with the religion though, as there is no way to definitively support and verify the information.

However, I think that religion in general enables us to maintain a sense of sanity. By providing us with answers, whether or not they may be correct, we can develop a greater comprehension of our purpose, and the world itself. One aspect that seems to serve as the distinguishing factor between truth and falsity is the concept of belief. If an individual believes something, does that in turn validate the object or component for the individual? I suppose that it’s oriented around perspective.

Why does someone need fear, to do good. As far as I know I do good (and don’t do bad) to make others and myself happy, and to minimilize sadness. I don’t believe in damnation nor do I let the judicial system hold me in check, yet I still try to do what makes everyone happy.

^according to Nietzsche, that weak and feeble charitable spirit in you is the byproduct of an upbringing in a Judeo-Christian society.

not my cup of tea, just throwing another idea out there.

Another Science v. Religion thread, except this time with a different cast.

I knew I should have moved to Burundi when I had the chance.

^^Well I just googled Nietzsche and I don’t like him!..lol

^Aw, he’s a sweetheart.

However, I also disagree with his philosophy on many counts.

ksarmand: I was more playing devil’s advocate (so to speak). I don’t really buy in to Nietzsche’s ideas, just putting it forth as a possible refutation of the idea of an innately compassionate human spirit…

Nietzsche’s mustache is also pretty terrifying, fyi.

^Oh, I think it’s sexy.

Yes, I gleaned that from your post; I was simply stating my individual position toward his philosophy.

it looks like an effing buffalo.

forgive me, but from your response, it seemed like your impression of me was that I was an atheist a$$hole.

Halogen, because I anticipate your response ( ), I’m not saying all atheists are *******s. trust me, I know a bunch of cool ones. By atheist a$$hole, I mean someone who looks condescendingly upon all who don’t buy his logic and consider religious folk feeble-minded and illogical

Large mustaches are simply an acquired taste, eh? ;)

Oh, no. You have been quite reasonable in all of your posts here, and I have enjoyed reading them. If I really had a problem with the means through which you stated your position, I would have said so.

I can think of a few of those. :)

I believe in God.
Reason: It pleases me to do so.

It pleases me less to believe in God than to believe that religion is just a set of myths to give people something upright by which to live their lives. The truth hurts because it challenges human pride.

IMHO, reality can go screw itself. That is all.

Gods are what people have faith in when they have little faith in themselves.

What is God to me?

Well, that’s quite simple my friends… God, to me, is a force (for lack of a better word) that either exists or doesn’t. Now, some of you may think I’m simply stating the obvious. Well, I counter by saying that it’s the obvious that humans most often forget. My point is that the only thing we know about God, with absolute certainty, is that he/she/it either exists or doesn’t which, in fact, shows the problematic nature of the question itself. None of us know any more than that so it’s unhealthy to be so dogmatic with our beliefs. I must note, however, that my uncertainty about God’s existance does not automatically extend to the concept of religion, which I, fairly confidently, believe is man-made.

What is the christian god to me?? Justification for shortcomings, the champion of the feeble-minded. What is god to me?? Something that I don’t know well enough to talk about. Maybe its the feeling you get when you step into cold rain, or maybe just the pressure on my bladder when im holding pi$$ in too long.

God is the homie.

paquenuque-

There really was no need for you to go out of your way to attack Christianity. Many guys, much smarter than you or me, embrace Christianity (think Francis Collins and his cronies) just as many brilliant men (think Richard Dawkins and his buddies) embrace atheism/agnosticism.
