What is good about Georgetown??

I don’t see how Georgetown is “much more” prestigious than WashU…

^^It isn’t. Once again informative is anything but…

Georgetown is one of the schools that students and HS guidance counselors rate more highly than academics do. It’s got a very good law school and a great IR program, but even in poli sci, from an academic’s point of view, its faculty is not regarded as particularly strong. The NRC ranking of graduate programs, which is mostly a reflection of perceived faculty strength based on a survey of academics is the same field, placed Georgetown’s poli sci program #77 in the country, below schools like Boston U, U Del, U Alabama, U Mass-Amherst, UConn, and U Wisconsin-Milwaukeee (yes, that’s right, Milwaukeee).

People who go there seem to love it, though. I guess there’s more to college than academics.

Students and HS counselors like the following schools more than academics…
Emory, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Tufts, WUSTL…I put Georgetown in that peer class of universities.

Aside from various academic strengths the other big difference between the schools is campus life especially the influence of athletics.

In the US intercollegiate athletics is a big part of US culture and for some the “traditional” college experience. In fact the ivy league is the athletic conference that binds harvard, yale, dartmouth, columbia, etc.

Georgetown participates at the highest level of division 1 athletics but wustl does not. Georgetown has an elite basketball team and thousands of students and alumni regularly attend games. The football team, albeit not as competitive, competes against teams from the Patriot League an Ivy League. The soccer, lacrosse and track and field teams are also very strong.

Whether or not you are an athlete or simply enjoy sports Georgetown’s participation in division 1 inter-collegiate athletics provides many opportunities to bond with classmates and alumni beyond the classroom and for years after graduation. This, combined with international nature of the school, translates into a strong alumni network around the world.

Fwiw. Georgetown does not offer an undergraduate degree in political science so it stands to reason that its department does not rank hightly. Georgetown offers an undergraduate degree in Government and it is top notch.

[Government, Politics and Policy - Georgetown University](http://www.georgetown.edu/academics/government-politics-and-policy/index.html)

and I quote:

“Georgetown’s department of government is considered one of the leading programs in political science in the United States. We offer training in international relations, comparative politics, political theory and American government.”

It seems that at GT Government=Poly Sci.

Could Gtown be considered a reach no matter what my stats are? I have a 32 act, 4 SAT II, 6 AP, good ECs…
