What is Greek Life like at UGA?

I'm planning on rushing my freshman year, but many southern schools have a stereotype of having very cliquey sororities. Is this true at UGA? Are there any sororities that have any specific stereotypes? If so, which ones? I'm a female from New England and I love the southern culture, but will it be harder for me to fit in?

I guess I would just like a little guidance on the rushing process and what I can expect from being in a social sorority at UGA. Thanks!

I’d have caution when looking at sites like Greek Rank. All sororities want to make themselves look a certain way and those websites aren’t always a fair representation, though they can be a place to start.

There are some sororities I like more than others. They do tend to have certain stereotypes but I’d encourage you to go for a group of girls you like rather than a “top-tier”. In the end, I decided against joining UGA’s Greek life. It was too expensive (averaging about $1200 a semester in fees plus whatever you pay to live in the house and be on the house’s meal plan) and I didn’t particularly bond with most of the girls. As an out of state student, it might be more beneficial for you, though. Everyone I know from OOS has been accepted here at UGA and I imagine it would be the same in most sororities.

I ended up joining a co-ed business fraternity (Delta Sigma Pi). I just felt more comfortable in a group of guys and girls where I felt I could be myself. There is also co-ed honors fraternity (Phi Sigma Pi) and a service sorority (Gamma Sigma Sigma). These are less expensive (about $100 a semester) and have a separate rush process. They still have events like socials, semi-formals, cabin weekends, etc but do not have a house on Greek row.

Shoot me a message at amandaco@uga.edu if you’d like! I’d be happy to talk to you more and maybe connect you with one of my friends who did join a sorority for a more balanced view. Go dawgs!
