What is Grinnell known for academically?

I agree with Josh. I have always found that the class composition is more important than the professor or the reputation of the department -- particularly at liberal arts colleges where class discussion is a key element of the class. You don't want a bunch of "high achieving" grade mongers who have no intellectual curiosity and just want to know what is going to be on the test.

In retrospect, my best classes were ones where there was a mix of abilities, but where the vast majority of the students were intellectually curious and open about the subject matter. Very subjective, I realize.

I just wanted to clarify that I was looking for a general sense from any Grinnell students, or their parents(assuming that their child has passed on any feedback relating to my question) of how challenging the English courses are, as well as the quality of any related programs(lit journals, etc) Basically, I'm looking for information beyond "...the resume(s) of the professors in the English department..." Thanks again.
