What is GSP??

I just applied Early Decision to the CAS at NYU. I've been looking around this site and some people have been talking about getting GSP'ed after applying ED. What IS GSP?? I don't remember reading anything about it on the NYU website. Is like getting deferred? I read on the FAQ section of website that NYU believes early decision should be early, and you will either get accepted/denied outright in your decision. Has GSP been discontinued from previous years?

I know this must be annoying, but here are my stats. Could someone tell me if I am in danger of getting GSP'ed?
GPA: 4.0 weighted 3.4 unweighted
SAT: 570 M, 680 CR, 800 W
Sent 2 AP Scores in Place of Subject Tests: 5 AP US History and 5 Psychology
International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate
Top 100 Public Highschool
Top Quarter of my Class
Lots of Extra Currics and Leadership Positions
English Lit major
Good Essay--I want to be a professional writer

Thanks to anyone who help me understand GSP!

gsp (general studies program) has been renamed lsp (liberal studies program). it’s a 1-2 year program focusing on liberal arts that many applicants are deferred to. just like there’s map requirements at nyu, lsp students have specific requirements they have to complete before transitioning to whatever school they originally applied to. you can also take electives in other nyu schools while in lsp, and vice versa. if you apply to stern, you can’t be placed into lsp, but applicants to all other schools can. If you get placed into lsp after applying ED, they give you a choice about accepting the program, so don’t worry.

I would say there’s a chance you could be placed in lsp, since i know people who had a higher GPA/SAT than you who have been placed into the program, but many people with your stats have been put into CAS/Steinhardt/Tisch/SCPS as well. i wouldn’t worry too much if you’re placed into lsp, because you’re an English Lit major, and lsp emphasizes humanities and is reading/writing intense. It will give you more required classes than others, leaving less room for electives.

thank you very much for this information. one more thing: if i am accepted into lsp, am i still obligated to go to nyu because i applied ed?

no, you are not obligated to attend NYU if you are LSP’d.

^does that apply to ED?

yes. LSP + ED = nonbinding agreement.

Okay…got my October SAT scores back, and I bumped up some scores: CR 740 and Math 620 (I know it’s low but keep in mind I intend on being an English Lit major), to give me a combined 1360/2160. Does this put me in a better place for acceptance in CAS?

^ yes, definitely, although i’m just gonna throw out that your stats, esp sat scores, are weirdly similar to mine (3.6ish uw, 2150, 8 ap’s, etc…) and i was placed into lsp. it really comes down to your overall application, and other factors which we can’t judge since we’re not admissions counselors. your gpa is a little on the low side (they recalculate it uw) so that lowers your chances. just don’t stress about it, you already applied ED so sit back and wait for decisions to come in. good luck

lol u give good advice. u said the overall app matter cuz when u replied to someone’s post, they had lower test scores. thats similar to my situation. everythin in my app is great except my sat scores lol and subject tests. i applied ED into CAS…but my sat total was 1800 wich is low, i know, but ive done other things to make up for it and theres a lotta other stuff that might help me out. also, i did horrible on subject tests becuz theres really nuthin for me to take! but i didnt state that, i probably shouldve : / but us history, i only did the first part at a community college and so couldnt do that, i was gonna do latin, but they took that out this year (i really shouldve said that!) and biology was 2 years ago so dont remember any of it…i heard chemistry was hard but im gonna do it soon cuz thats the most recent subject ive taken but i still prolly wont do good and literature i did really bad on. french too-horrible. cuz i only had 3 years of it.

anywayyzz…im scared lol
