What is involved in the physical fitness test?

What exactly do you have to do and how does it determine the number of PE classes that you must take?

I've heard there's a swim test, flexibility test, cardio test...but that's all I know.

sexual stamina

and you thought uchicago was boring

wow, you have to take PE there....?

wow-___-;;;; seriously?

you have to take pe there, if you screw up on that physicial test or whatever?

they want to be sure you are educated in ALL areas.

though its not so bad if you have to take it, I believe you only have to go for a quarter and hte classes are actually quite fun (I'll probobly take one either way)

Can't you just bypass all your PE classes with a good enough showing on the physical fitness and swim tests?

Yeah. I also think that gym classes don't count for credit, so you aren't wasting your precious course time, which is key. The gym looks nice anyway. I'll have to continue to feed my yoga habit there...

The PE test involves a number of factors, like heart rate, flexibility, strength that you go through a circuit of activities to test. the swim test is a separate entity, and passing one does not effect the other. They basically suck. If you are very out of shape and can't swim you could get stuck with three quarters of PE requirements plus a quarter of swimming. definately hope that doesn't happen to you, once inrolled in PE you cannot miss class or they will fail you. Have fun!

Christ, I thought the days of stupid gym requirements were behind me with high school. I love that New York State demands that a senior takes gym, but not a foreign language. In the words of Woody Allen, "Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym."

I actually wouldn't mind the gym requirement at UChicago! I mean, if you have extra space in your schedule, why not? That'd be the ONLY thing I'd be worried about: space.

But otherwise, their classes look kind of cool. If I was stuck doing gym at UChicago... hello pilates and yoga? Which I do anyway???? OKAY! I think it's awesome -- it forces you to relax for a little bit. And there was also like a CPR thing that counts as a PE requirement.

There's also jogging/weight lifting and hardcore classes, but I'd be very happy getting "stuck" with pilates.

Or, you could also pass the gym tests and do pilates on your own time instead of trying to fit a course into your schedule. Isn't that a better idea?

Well, working out is HEALTHY. A stress reliever. If you add in another class instead of that gym class, then you're adding more studying and work that needs to be done that takes away from an already small amount of free time. If that's your plan, have fun. If it wasn't for gym in High School I'd never get a chance to work out because I barely have free time during the year as it is. Plus with extracurriculars and what-not, who has time to go to the gym three times a week AND study AND meet all the responsibilities placed on you?

I think people just have this absurd fear of gym classes, I don't know. Three quarters of gym? Meaning you could do... one quarter until your junior year? Or you can be creative and skip a year! Sounds so hard. I don't know how I'll ever find time in my schedule to meet that.

I love working out. But I do it on my own time. I don't need to be bothered with some BS class.

They dont count it as your total number of courses so it can be fit in anywhere (and there isnt homework or studying so its not like its a huge class commitment).

Still, I'm not a big fan of the idea. Gym is ruined for me when it becomes forced rather than optional. Besides, for a supposedly libertarian school, why force people to take gym? If they want to be fat and die, then that's their problem, no?

jpps1: "Besides, for a supposedly libertarian school, why force people to take gym?"

UChicago is not a "supposedly libertarian school." A few famous economists from UChicago were libertarian. That's it. UChicago is very un-libertarian in general. They have a core of ~20 classes.

-Cesare

Yeah, the physical education is a part of the core really. Just like Hum or Sosc. Actually its probobly more like language. They believe you should have a minimum knowledge in an area (like how to swim) and if you have that, you can test out of it, otherwise you will be taking the class.

Christ, have a sense of humor. I wasn't being totally serious.

Sorry. A lot of the nuance of a comment is lost online. I didn't realize you were being humorous.
