What is it like at Swarthmore?

How is the atmosphere? Is it intellectual and nerdy? Are sports a dominant or minor part of the school’s atmosphere? How is the workload? Is the campus nice? Is the campus safe? Are there enough things to do off campus? Lastly, is it insanely difficult like everyone says?

Your questions are answered in depth in other threads. In short: Pleasant, somewhat, 25% participate in sports, workload keeps you acceptably busy, campus is serene, safe, 2.5 million are in Philly area, not insanely difficult but reasonably serious.

How is the atmosphere?

Depends on who your friends with. People I know here are great, so it’s great.

Is it intellectual and nerdy?

Very much so.

Are sports a dominant or minor part of the school’s atmosphere?

However big you want it to be. I chose for it to be minor but I’m friends with many athletes.

How is the workload?

Can be unwieldy but interesting.

Is the campus nice?

Of course, we’re on an arboretum.

Is the campus safe?

Ridiculously so.

Are there enough things to do off campus?

Philadelphia might get boring if you go twice every week.

Lastly, is it insanely difficult like everyone says?

No. If you get in you can do it, of course with help along the way.

I love the atmosphere here. Yes, you could say it's "intellectual and nerdy," but there is no pressure to be academic at all times! There is a lot of discussion about classes and personal interests, but only between people who genuinely want to be having conversations about those topics.
Sports are not hugely important to many students on campus. However, as a member of a sports team, I can say that the team includes my closest friends here, and also throws some really fun parties! The gym known as the matchbox, is widely used by team members as well as non-sports players.
The workload is heavy, but nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. People study in groups, and work never makes it impossible to get sleep or go out with friends. Campus is absolutely gorgeous, and I have never felt unsafe for a second, even walking back to my dorm alone at night.
Off campus, you can go to Philly , which has everything, or Media, a smaller town with great food, movies, and Trader Joe's! There are also two large malls close by. Shuttles can take you from campus to just about anywhere, and Philly is accessible by train. Finally, when the work gets tough, professors are incredible, and will do whatever it takes to help you get back on track!

Hope this helps!!
