What is it like going in undeclared vs with a major

I just got accepted to UCSB college of letters and sciences with an undeclared major. I want to know what it will be like in terms of choosing classes and ultimately selecting my major. As of right now, Economics is currently on the list of open majors that I could switch to, but I am not 100% sure that is what I want to do. Would it be better to switch into economics now and possibly changing later, or should I stay undeclared.

it makes absolutely no difference to have a declared major in L&S. Nothing is going to prevent you from picking Econ or any other major in the future. For that matter, you can’t switch into Econ now. Econ, like other in-demand majors, has what is called a pre-major. Fill out the piece of paper if you wish and voila! you are a pre-Econ major. Which also means absolutely nothing. Pre-econ majors get no priority in enrolling in classes ahead of anyone else, nor are they allowed to take classes off limits to others.

In order to actually be accepted into Econ you have to complete a specified set of classes with a specified GPA. You can find all the details on the dept website for Econ, Psych, etc. There is no requirement that you first be in the pre-major before you apply for the major.

So enroll at UCSB, start taking classes, if you find you still want to major in Econ or one of its sub-branches then take the prerequisites and apply.

Going in as undeclared, you have the opportunity to explore your options when choosing classes. For example, psychology majors are not able to take psych 1 their first quarter here, but you can as a undeclared major. But there is one catch, let’s say you are interested in psych after psych 1, if you want to take the next class, psych 3, it will be harder for you to get the class since you are not in the major.

Since you are learning towards econ (hell yea!), there isn’t really any restrictions as an undeclared major. You can declare the pre-econ major now if you want or wait till you are completely sure. It is very easy to switch majors in the College of Letters and Science here at UCSB. Do not worry too much about it.

Sometimes you get priority for class registration with a major, as @88414055 says. You can declare a major and change it later, if the major you want to change it to is not impacted. You just have to be careful because majors have different course requirements, and if you do that too much it will add to how long it takes you to graduate.

As long as you’re not planning on majoring in one of the engineering majors, being undeclared for a few quarters usually doesn’t make that much of a difference.
