What is it like not to have a cell phone in HS?

@FantasyVesperia. that is pretty funny, giving away your mom’s number.

Wait, some people don’t have cellphones in high school??? I have never met anyone like that

Yeah seriously. The only person I know w/o a cell phone & facebook is a social pariah.

I don’t know anyone without a cell phone. At all. But OP you sound pretty depressed about it and it sounds like your parents have the ability to get you one so I would suggest just getting one… It doesn’t mean you’re gonna be addicted especially if you get one of those cheap flip phones that doesn’t do anything other than call/text.

Get metroPCS. Yeah, the service may not be all that great. But if you live near a city then it’ll be okay. It’s the cheapest phone company I can think of. Lol.

I’m a junior in HS and recently received my FIRST cell phone for Xmas. My family doesn’t make a lot of $$, so I was shocked when I got it.
I thought it was normal for a while, but people were always like “OMG! You don’t have a cell phone? How do you survive?”
I’m now addicted to my smartphone. I’m still getting used to texting, though.

Some people are low-income and can’t afford a monthly plan or a cellphone in general. Some people also have parents that don’t allow them to get a phone. There are several other reasons but I just wanted to point those out in particular.

I didn’t have a cell phone freshman or sophomore year, but decided to get one Junior year (I’m a senior now). I decided to get one because it was becoming a huge social inconvenience to not have one.

Uh it pretty normal. You can’t tell time (oh wait you can), You can’t text friends (stop being stupid and pass notes), You can’t call (You can wait can’t you), and you can’t cheat (just find a better way to cheat).

As someone who didn’t have a phone in junior high (yes everyone had a phone in junior high) I can tell you that it is a real **** block with girls to not have a phone and texting… it is hard to start stuff now without one.

I can’t do anything without a cell phone! Like I go on alot of school events and I literally HAVE to have a cell phone.

My friend got a cell phone sophomore year. Only person I’ve ever met without a cell phone in high school. I had a (crappy) prepaid phone from 6th to the first few months of 12th grade, then my mom got me an iphone. Ahh, I love it so.

It’s very difficult to not have a cell phone, simply because of how clubs contact you on facebook, or when working on a project. Not only that, texting + calling is a convenience socially. No cell phone and no facebook… unheard of.

Get a prepaid phone, you won’t regret it. Just don’t use it as much b/c it can get expensive for people who use it a lot.

Well mine doesn’t work, and I haven’t used it for a few months… so I guess I’m one of the people with no phones. It’s annoying factor is even worse considering I go to a school where like 45% of the students have an iPhone, 30% have Samsung Galaxy SII, 10% have other smart phones and 15% of students have regular phones.
I think after surviving without being able to text/call whenever for a month, others are more annoyed by it than I am. I like not being contacted by school related things every moment of the day and I have email/FB/etc. if I want/need to talk to people. In saying that, I’m at boarding school… so my circumstances are different to normal HSers.

Well … I can still have genuine relationships without a phone, right?

Eh … I’m a junior anyway, and hardly anyone even asks me for a number. I’ll survive senior year w/o a cell phone unless I suddenly decide to start a relationship with a freshman or something and wait until college and then get my party on :).

Umm…??

Oh micro, we think alike

It’s really for communication. Meet up here, I’m going to be late, don’t forget x, etc. etc. etc. It’s really hard to keep the herd of cats we call high schoolers settled in a single social plan without constant contact.

Not having a phone in high school is like trying to avoid getting a girl pregnant without a condom. You can do it, but is hard.

Pun intended

I haven’t had one for about a month now (broken, contract isn’t up), and it’s been pretty difficult. I have nothing to put in the ‘cell phone number’ box when asked. I still have friends try to text or call me in vain, I have to borrow friends’ cell phones constantly for calls that are ACTUALLY important. Those random spaces of time if you show up early somewhere or something sure get long and awkward. Just yesterday I waited outside a theatre alone for an 90 MINUTES because I didn’t know that the start time from rehearsal was moved from 4 to 5:30, that information had been communicated by text message.

My car is a graveyard of printed out Mapquest directions which offer no help if I miss an exit or mess up, so I’m getting lost a LOT. Here’s another one, my car broke down at the side of the interstate recently and I had to walk about a mile next to the highway and down an off-ramp to nearest gas station and then get charged a dollar to use their phone.

It’s a lot more difficult than not having a Facebook. It’s seriously affecting my quality of life, and who knows what important calls I may never receive. Maybe it would be easier if you never had one and were used to it, but I’m really, really starting to get sick of it. Screw modern technology.

David, You have bad Karma… I can go a month without my own phone. You shouldn’t put all your (i can’t find the word for it) uh… hope in a single phone.
