What is it like to be a software engineer and what is required from one?

LOL ucbalumnus is right. It is probably more like 15-20 years ago. I think time becomes a blur when you get old. Where has all the time gone!

There was outsourcing in the mid-late 80’s where a company would bring 4 Indian software dudes to the US, put them in a 2 bedroom apartment, provide a rusted out Civic, and pay India wages (then a few hundred dollars a month) + cost of living allowance (equally low). The SE Michigan had tons of such workers. Legit outsourcing as we know it started pre Y2K and job cuts began full force after 2001 or so.

I have worked as a software engineer role in an O&G company (I am EE) and here is my experience:

-you either sit at your desk full of laptops and monitors or you are at a meeting room.

 • The wage is pretty good and benefits are excellent
 • boring (mostly similar thing with little discrepancy between designs)
 • in my situation, I didn’t think there is much personal growth as you will only be getting more and more experience on the company-customized libraries, so the experience may not be compatible when moving on to another company.
 • I cant say anything about the stability of the job as I have only worked there for less than a year before I moved to another job (non software related)

Damn. So I keep hearing that so many of these jobs keep getting outsourced. For the love of God, what jobs now-a-days aren’t getting outsourced?
