What is life at UIUC like?

I'm an international student that was accepted into UIUC for engineering and I would love to hear some of the experiences of people who attend or have attended school there. I've read a lot about the program and heard positive things about the academic experience there and future job/grad school outlook. However I would like to learn a bit more about day to day life there and the experience in the community. Would you say there is an apparent segregation between students of different racial backgrounds? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t go to illinois but I got accepted and I’m thinking of going. I can say that when I visited there was a lot of diversity and people were doing things together so I assume that race isn’t a big deal. Also, I don’t think that there is a lot of racial segregation in colleges anymore. If there is it’ll probably down south but that doesn’t happen much.

I’m a freshman at UIUC. I would say as far as segregation goes, it’s not segregation by definition. However, you can see groups of students from cultural backgrounds collect around campus. So in class I may be in a group of students from 3 different countries and we get along great. However, when we are not in class they each may hang out with friends from their home countries. So there is a lot of diversity, yet also a lot of students with common culture.
