What is life like?

Hi! I am a senior in high school and I want to apply for Johns Hopkins for BME major. I was wondering if there are any current JHU students who are willing to share their life story and in that school. JHU is currently my number one choice and I have seen some pros and cons. However, I really want a more personal experience, rather than just common pros and cons. I mean all universities have their own negative parts such as "not having good food, or "bad area" and so on and so forth. But a more personal experience would be great and then I can see if I can relate to that. I would really want people who are currently studying there, not alumni students as much (universities change during the years so opinions can be different).
Please do reply fast! Thank you!

bump wondering the same hting too!!

I am a current sophomore at Hopkins and to be honest this place is extremely stressful. You have to be prepared to give up sleeping and live in the library. Coffee will be your new best friend. Virtually everyone is pre-med, so, people tend be extremely focused on academics. Your grades will depend on a curve. In some classes a 20% will become a 100% after the curve. There isn’t much to do here besides build your resume. We do offer covered grades first semester but remember just because the grades are covered doesn’t mean you can’t fail.

Hello, current Hopkins sophomore as well. Hope this isn’t too late a post?

While I think undergrad777 makes good points - students here work really hard - I would beg to differ about life on campus. Schoolwork is stressful, especially since most Hopkins students have pretty heavy course-load. But I’d say it really depends on 1) the classes you take and 2) the way you organize your time.

I have BME friends who work really hard all day (in fact, my friend is a Comp-Sci/BME double major) and still have a pretty good time. Some classes will take more time, like Organic Chemistry, for instance, but if you work out your schedule well, you should be able to handle it.

Apart from studying, I also go out to eat with my friends. There’s a Korean place that we really like to go to on weekends, and we sometimes go to the nearby cinema to watch a movie. There are also clubs and sports on campus, if you want to join some kind of extra-curricular activity.

If you’re talking about school spirit, Hopkins is unfortunately lacking in this department. Our lacrosse teams (men and women) are D1 but turnout for sports games generally tends to be underwhelming. People usually like it here, though there is, as always, dissatisfaction with the school, either in its policies or food etc. Keep in mind, though, that Hopkins students ARE very driven; everyone works really hard. Like, really hard.

If you’re looking for a school that has a ton of school spirit and political activism, Hopkins probably won’t match your expectations. But if you want a school where you can really do your best and excel, then by all means, come! Would advise taking a college tour, too, for a feel of Homewood campus.

Hope that helped! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

@undergrad777 @verydoge‌ Thank you so much! I wouldn’t call myself extremely driven and motivated in studying all the time, but I do study. Staying up late at night is no biggie, because I have done it all the time. But, this is great! I do want a go to a college that has school spirit, but I want a college that will also help me excel with my studies. I will definitely apply to Johns Hopkins, so I hope I make a good decision for the future!

Again, thank you so much. This helped a lot!

It’s not stressful if you have strong time management skills! I haven’t stayed up late to study for any exams at Hopkins. Study hard. Play Hard.

@undergrad777, I’m pre-law poli sci global studies and a language…that’s my concern, the emphasis is on the sciences. Also I do want to have a (college) life…
