What is living in Mosher Jordan (Mojo) hall like?

I'll be living there in the fall. If people could tell me about their experience there, or what they know of it, I would really appreciate it.

Is it social? How big are the doubles? What are pros and cons of living there? Suggestions as to what to pack and anything else would be helpful too! Thanks!

Also I'm in the Michigan research community. I'm not sure if that changes anything.

I’m living in mojo too! I’m in WISE. I’m a freshman too so I don’t really know but I know that it is substance free so no partying.

Not the entire building is substance free, usually only the first floor of each residence hall.

From what I heard MoJo is pretty nice in terms of facilities. There is A/C. The RAs tend to be strict. The double rooms are small. They are probably the smallest double rooms on campus. Maybe a bit bigger than Markley’s. I’ve seen their rooms, but they have a lot of lounges.

As you probably know, the university has 3 “neighborhoods”. Central, the Hill, and North.

The Hill (Stockwell, Alice Lloyd, MoJo, Couzens, Markley) is in my opinion, the best area to live. This is mostly a combination of location and quality of the buildings. The university has began an initiative to improve housing through constant renovation, and because the building on the Hill are smaller and easier to renovate, they began there. All buildings have been fully renovated, except for Markley. That means that ALL dorms on the hill have been renovated within the last 5 years, with AC in every room, new furniture, new lounges, new technology, WiFI, and new bathrooms. Alice Lloyd is the most recently renovated. Markley is too large to renovate anytime soon.

Locationwise, the Hill is the closest to the CCRB (the gym) and has the Marketplace dining hall (one of the larger dinging halls). In fact, the Marketplace is attached to MoJo, so you never have to go outside to eat if you live there. In addition to this, the Hill is very close to CC Little, the main bus station, and various bus stops around the Hill itself means that if you’re an engineer, North Campus is never further than a 7-10 minute bus ride.

You can easily go to all events and classes on central campus.

Why is the hill better than Central or North? Well, it’s better than North simply because it’s not on NORTH campus, which, when you ask most people, is the last place they want to live (old, large buildings, with no A/C, far from central campus, so you’ll have to take a bus for most of your classes to central, far from activities like football games and parties on the weekends). It’s better than central because central campus dorms aren’t renovated yet, so they aren’t as nice (no A/C). That is changing pretty quick though, the university is currently renovating central campus dorms too (East Hall will be the first to be finished, and will open in the fall)

I am a sophomore in computer science, and will be a Community Assistant in MoJo in the fall. I was lucky enough to live in Alice Lloyd freshman year. Loved it.

A word on parties: NO ONE PARTIES IN THE DORMS. In any dorm. you might be able to get away with 10 people in the room drinking, if you keep the noise down. In addition to RAs, there are Department of Public Safety officers doing rounds often, and too much noise will have them knocking on your door. It doesn’t matter if your floor is substance free. That’s just a label, i’m guessing so that parents will feel more reassured. Nevertheless, no substances are allowed in any dorms.

Anyways…what a long post…long story short, MoJo is one of the best places to possibly live. Many who have lived there freshman year wish they could stay a second year. If you get Couzens, Allice Lloyd, Stockwell, or East Hall, you are also in very good shape.

Mojo is great!
There’s air conditioning, it’s close to the CCRB, and the rooms are really nice. The RAs has really chilled down a lot from what I hear. The best thing about Mojo is that it’s connected to the dining hall, so in the winter time you don’t have to leave the warmth to go eat.

PROS
-In the hill area (social bc many dorms nearby and not on north campus)
-newly renovated
-many nice lounges
-close community bc of learning communities
-near CCRB
-good dining hall in building

CONS
-small rooms
-strict RAs
-good walk to classes

Final tip: Never say Mosher Jordan ever again
