What is meant by this?

What is meant by this?,…In addition to the Common Application requirements, Brown University requires applicants to choose an essay topic and submit a personal essay. Please return to the Writing section of the Common Application to complete your essay.
Which essay is it talking about, the Common App Essay or a Brown’s personal essay (which I have no idea about)?

Where do you find it

Brown’s Essays.

No ski I don’t understand,…What does Brown mean by ‘Brown University requires applicants to CHOOSE an essay topic and submit a personal essay’.

It means that Brown requires you to fill out the writing section of the Common App, along with the Brown supplement. You need to choose one of the CA essays.

If you went onto the Common App, I think it’s pretty obvious what you need to do.

So why does Brown say that It requires a personal essay? Can’t it just say that it requires the Common App Essay?,…Thanks a lot people. I appreciate your time.

Can you put a link to where you see this requirement for a “personal essay”? Or explain where you see it?

Ok, never mind the link.
Yes, it would be clearer to say they require the Common App essay. This is the first year the Common App essay is optional, so it is the first year they have to specifically state that the Common App essay was a requirement. Perhaps they didn’t realize their wording might be confusing.

The Common App essay is optional???,…Man, this is a process of constant discovery. But if it is optional, does the green tick come on the ‘Writing’ tab in the common application if one doesn’t write the essay?

It apparently isn’t optional for Brown.

This year, the Common App made the essay “optional” so that the Common App could be used by colleges that do not not require an essay for admissions (some state schools, for example). The essay is not optional for Brown. That is why the green tick came up and why Brown included the reminder to submit the personal essay
