What is Mount Holyoke like?

How is it like at a girls college? Are there boys in the extracurriculars?
I want to study International Relations/Political Science. Any input?

Thank you, Have a great day!

I’ve only been at Mount Holyoke a month, but so far I’m loving it. I suppose the amount of boys it depends on the extracurricular activity- I know that there is overlap with some of the student organizations, but on my sports team there obviously isn’t. The fact that I’m going to an all women’s college hasn’t really struck me. I don’t really feel like I’m missing out on much, since there are boys that walk around campus and in some of my classes, and it’s really easy to take the bus to the coed campuses.

From what I hear, the IR/PS department is really good. There’s some really excellent professors there, and, more importantly, you have access to them. We were recently top of the rankings for best professors (about 13 of the top 300 college professors came from MHC, the most of every college). I’ve got to run right now, but feel free to PM me if you have any other specific questions about student life here.

I’m also a firstie, and so far it’s been great. I wasn’t planning on going to an all women’s college, but it happened. I’m glad I’m here, I’ve made great friends, and there’s an incredible sense of community.

There are guys on campus, either that live in South Hadley and use the campus for walks/jogs, or from the other colleges who come here for classes. Also, there’s parties every week and there are ALWAYS a buttload of guys at them.

And of course, there’s the pvta, and you can go to the other colleges anytime with ease and for free.

Have another firstie!

I love it here. I agree with Ali that the sense of community is amazing. My classes are engaging and I’ve really enjoyed most of my professors. The students here are pretty incredible, too; it’s so different from secondary school. The campus is, as a whole, really tolerant, progressive, and forward thinking. We also have been ranked for having fabulous dorms (and it’s definitely true). I can’t say I’ve been involved with IR/PS, but I know that our school is really focused on multiculturalism. 25% of our students are international and there’s a lot of events/lectures/things to go to on campus and in the Consortium that might interest you, too.

As for guys, I think that you really control how much you’re involved with them. I see them around, but they’re not really important to me/my college experience, but I know girls who do spend a significant amount of time around guys and they seem to do pretty well.

Hope that helped!

Daughter graduated from MHC in May. She loved it and is a devoted alum, and she’s not a “joiner” by nature. She feels it empowered her and gave her a sense of community. Once a MoHo, always a MoHo. MHC is part of a 5 college consortium - Smith, Amherst, UMass and Hampshire - lots of educational and social opportunities.

I’m in Jazz band (among other music ensembles) so I’m friends with a guy from Hampshire who already takes lessons here. I see guys from other colleges in the languages building a lot since MoHo offers more/better languages classes than Hampshire. I also know people who take classes at UMass, Amherst, Hampshire, and make friends there too! I would really not worry about not being able to make guy friends or find a boyfriend.

IR is a huge major but I know quite a few people who are excited to do it!

Mount Holyoke is a lot more rigorous than I expected considering the admission rate so be prepared to work really hard… but it’s totally worth it for the cool people I’m meeting and exciting classes I’m in (even if it’s a lot harder to be a good student than it was in high school).

Thank you so much!! I’m definitely applying. The Five College certificate for International Relations sounds very exciting!! Really appreciate all your inputs!!!
