For an accepted student who has never visited, how would you guys describe MSU? I know its huge, but does it feel that way? What are the students like? I'm from the Northeast, so I'm used to preppy style people. Will it be a total different setting at MSU?

(Disclaimer: This is from an out-of-state person’s perspective-I’m from Alaska). I would say MSU and the midwest in general are more laid-back than much of the Northeast. They like to wear many of the same things (uggs, northface jackets etc) in terms of preppy-ness but students at MSU also like to dress down a lot (just the casual MSU sweatshirt) unless they are going off to the bars/a job interview. There are less snooty-rich people at MSU than average, I’d say the average student at MSU is strictly middle class so there is not much of the “classist” attitude and competition for grades is not really high. Students in general care about classes and grades but love to party as well (generally on fridays & Saturdays & sometimes Thursdays/other random days of the week). Sports culture is very prevalent with lots of school spirit, and almost everyone cares about the football and basketball games. The campus is huge but it is easy to get to know people especially since you are required to live on campus in the dorms for your first year.

fa-la-la’s description seems pretty accurate. MSU is a huge school and it will feel that way especially on a cold winter day. They do a good job, however, of finding a way for students to develop their own niches within the larger school so it doesn’t seem so big. MSU will have a midwestern feel to it. They are fewer students from the Northeast than you would find at Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin or Indiana. The sports culture is big. My niece discovered college football last semester at MSU. Big school spirit.

It is big and green and students wear funny looking helmets to sporting events.
